The third edition has recently been published and ELSEVIER has seized the opportunity to translate it into Spanish. The experience and teaching ability of Professor Chokroverty, a master of Sleep Medicine and one of the first neurologists who dedicated their professional skills to this field, is perfectly reflected in this book.The author has surrounded himself with leading experts in sleep medicine, from different parts of the world and from different fields in medicine, to create a great manuscript that will remain a reference in this field. Sleep medicine is one of the paradigms of medicine in terms of how interdisciplinary problems and treatments are and this book, in all its sections, confirms this fact. Its contents–clear, orderly and smooth–are suitable and necessary for all fields of medicine that relate to sleep. While focusing mainly on neurology, the text also explains basic concepts very clearly as well as more practical technical and clinical aspects that are greatly useful for other specialties related to sleep medicine.We have not had the opportunity to know the first edition, but, really, the contents of the text before us are extremely up to date. The contents of the book are quite understandable for all specialists in other fields outside of neuroscience with an interest in sleep medicine; and this should become a reference book for both experienced professionals and students, as well as for those who are becoming interested in this fascinating field.

The author divides the book into three main sections. The first deals with the basics aspects of sleep and includes 10 chapters that clearly describe interesting areas such as the neurobiology or neurochemistry of sleep, its usefulness in the consolidation of memories or the physiological changes taking place during sleep. That is, it explains through updated, clearly stated concepts what sleep is and what it does. The second part of the text is divided into eight additional chapters and discusses the technical considerations of the exploration of sleep. It fundamentally describes in different chapters the value and usefulness of polysomnography techniques in all their forms and expressions. However, this section also adds other diagnostic techniques on sleep latency or maintenance of wakefulness, and an especially interesting chapter on neuroimaging.

Finally, the third section (the most extensive) consists of 20 chapters. In a very educational manner, this last section explains how to approach patients with a sleep disorder, what the different pathologies are, how they are diagnosed and how we approach them and carry out their treatment. It also introduces the different inter-relationships of sleep disorders with other diseases and their manifestations in various groups of individuals such as children, elderly patients or women.

The text is generally very interesting and easy to read. A great part of its merit lies in the quality of its translation and its scientific review carried out by Professor Juan Lorente, a known otolaryngologist, expert on sleep disorders in our country.

In summary, this is a highly recommendable book for anyone interested in sleep disorders, with any level of experience and from any related discipline. It offers knowledge that is fundamental and absolutely necessary for developing our work in this field. To say this of a textbook, at a time of total control of information by other, more globalised and accessible means, constitutes great praise.
" "pdfFichero" => "main.pdf" "tienePdf" => true "NotaPie" => array:1 [ 0 => array:2 [ "etiqueta" => "☆" "nota" => "
Please cite this article as: Esteller Moré E.
