Physical examination was unremarkable besides a pre-auricular scar. The diagnosis of Frey's syndrome was established. This consists of flushing and sweating of the pre-auricular region in response to salivary stimuli, typically after parotid surgery. It's provoked by the aberrant reinnervation of post-ganglionic parasympathetic fibers to denervated sweat glands and blood vessels that cover the parotid. The diagnosis is based on clinical history, but the confirmatory test can be done with a simple inspection, the Minor Test, applying an iodine solution and starch powder to the pre-auricular skin. After a salivary stimulus (a candy, for example), the starch turns purple in the presence of iodine and sweat (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0005">Fig. 1</a>). The application of this type of confirmatory and classic tests proves to be important both for tranquilizing patients and for educational purposes.
