Article information

Ectopic ureters are present in approximately 1 in each 2000 neonates, being associated to a pyeloureteral duplicity in 85% of cases. Clinical presentations include incontinence and urinary tract infections. Ectopic ureters are often associated to a dysplastic upper pole with minimal function. In these cases, the best treatment is upper pole nephrectomy. Case report: 23 year old female affected from colic pain at the left renal fossa, hyperthermia and urinary leakage. Ultrasonography, excretory urography and anterograde pyelography showed a right bifid ureter and left duplex kidney with upper pole hydronephrosis and ectopic ureteral drainage to the urethra. Once the diagnosis was ascertained, left upper pole nephrectomy and partial ureterectomy were performed.
