Penultimate child of 6, of a Spanish immigrant from Jerez de la Frontera and a Cuban woman from Matanzas, the premature death of his mother, his father's blindness due to the cataracts he suffered from, and the problems of independence that Cuba was going through, prompted his family, with the help of his godfather and protector, Dr. Joaquín Fábrega, Catalan doctor resident in Havana and who returned to the Peninsula, to decide to send him and his older brother, Pedro, to study in Spain.</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="fig0005"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="par0020" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">He arrived in Barcelona in 1872 and finished high school, which he had begun in Havana with the Jesuits, at the General and Technical secondary school, at the age of 13, and his degree started with a degree in medicine at the University of Barcelona, which he finished in 1877 with an A, at 17. He excelled particularly in the subjects of Anatomy and Dissection taught by professors Carlos Silóniz (1815–1898) and Jaime Farreras respectively, who sparked great interest in these fields that made him devote his holidays to practice anatomical dissection at the so-called ‘Corralet’, a gloomy cabin located in the basement of the <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">Hospital de la Santa Cruz</span>, in the hallway that connected it with the College of Surgeons, and where the Faculty of Medicine was. He moved to Madrid to obtain a degree as a doctor and, enrolled in the course of Histology, explained by Professor Aureliano Maestre de San Juan (1828–1890), coincided with and was a fellow student of Santiago Ramón y Cajal. He prepared his report ‘Contagion of consumption’ which he read in September 1878 and with which he won an extraordinary award. He returned to Barcelona in order to return to Cuba, like his brother, also graduate in Medicine and urologist but, given his worth, his godfather advised him to broaden his knowledge in Europe.</p><p id="par0025" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">With the intention of ending up in Germany, he landed in Paris, where he began his technical education. His attraction to histology made him attend the lessons by Louis Antoine Ranvier (1835–1922), one of the leading pathologists in the second half of the nineteenth century and whose work he studied at the Faculty, and his teaching made him understand that Anatomy and Physiology should be explained together. He had Louis Malassez (1842–1909) as his fellow student, the great physiologist with whom he carried out several works, and who, along with the professor, convinced him to remain in the city of the Seine, where he settled permanently.</p><p id="par0030" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">He studied Medicine again, and in 1883, he got a position as an intern in Paris hospitals, in contrast, with number one, so he was awarded the prize Godart of the Academy of Sciences for Distinguished Alumni, and he joined surgical services, primarily in the Trelat Hospital, then in Le Dentu, and, at the end of his fourth year of internship, in 1888, he received the Gold Medal of the Hospitals of Paris and began his activity in the Necker Hospital, wherein Clinic of Urinary Tract Diseases urological processes started to be treated. Created in 1864 by Jean Civiale (1796–1867), when he died, three years later, Jean-Casimir Felix Guyon (1831–1920) succeeded him, professor at the Faculty of Medicine who established there a urological school of great prestige to which physicians of all nations attended to specialize. He was also the founder of the first Association of Urology, the French one, in 1896.</p><p id="par0035" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Guyon was his master. With her he won first prize at the Faculty of Medicine of Paris and with her began his fruitful urological literature. In 1890 he also got, by means of a competitive examination, a position as the head of the University Clinic of the Urinary Tract. In 1891, he published ‘Les tumeurs de la vessie’ (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0015">Fig. 3</a>), and in 1892, after a new and brilliant selection process involving interviews and competitive examinations, he got the position of associate professor of Surgery, so he was the youngest in the Faculty and won, for the second time, the Godart award of the Academy of Medical Sciences. In 1894, he obtained the appointment of surgeon in the hospitals of Paris. In 1897, he presented the cystoscope nail, which facilitates ureteral catheterization.</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="fig0010"></elsevierMultimedia><elsevierMultimedia ident="fig0015"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="par0040" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">In 1901, he served at the Maison Dubois, in which he was engaged in the specialty surgery called ‘urological Fridays’, always busy with surgeons eager to learn his surgical techniques. In 1905 ‘Exploration des fonctions rénales’ (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0025">Fig. 5</a>) appeared, for which he was awarded the Temblay prize. In the late 1906s, following the retirement of Dr. Guyon, he succeeded him as the head of the Necker Clinic and, after a new and fierce opposition, as a professor of the Urinary Tract at the University of Paris as well. In 1909, he unveiled his culminating work ‘Médicine Opératoire des Voies Urinaires’ (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0030">Fig. 6</a>).<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0005"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1–5</span></a></p><elsevierMultimedia ident="fig0020"></elsevierMultimedia><elsevierMultimedia ident="fig0025"></elsevierMultimedia><elsevierMultimedia ident="fig0030"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="par0050" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">He took part with Guyon in the publication of the volumes of ‘Annales des Maladies des Organes Genito-Urinaires’, where he published several works. In a tribute paid to him in the island, on 9 September 1890, he said: ‘If the hazards of life made me adopt the great French nation as a country, I never forget that I am Cuban and my efforts will always tend to make me worthy of the country I was born in’.
