This opens the door to higher image quality&#44; increasingly precise diagnostic and follow-up and breakthroughs in the pathophysiological assessment of various ocular diseases in general and of the macula and the retina in particular&#46;</p><p id="par0010" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Extremely fast technological developments&#44; together with relentless and intense marketing pressures&#44; could lead the ophthalmological community to believe that any new equipment will be better than the preceding one&#46; What is worse&#44; it could lead us to forget the basic principles which&#44; from the technological viewpoint and their applicability in daily clinical practice&#44; support our decision-making related to the management and acquisition of OCT systems&#46; One example is the &#8220;war&#8221; between the recent Swept Source OCT &#40;SS-OCT&#41; against the already established Spectral Domain OCT &#40;SD-OCT&#41;&#46;</p><p id="par0015" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">For instance&#44; let us take 2 commercial OCT systems&#58; Spectralis OCT &#40;Heidelberg Engineering&#44; Heidelberg&#44; Germany&#41; as an example of an SD-OCT system&#44; and DRI OCT Triton &#40;Topcon Medical Systems Inc&#46;&#44; Oakland&#44; NJ&#44; USA&#41; as the SS-OCT system&#46; Spectralis OCT utilizes a wavelength of 840<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>nm and includes the <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">enhanced depth imaging</span> mode &#40;EDI&#41;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0020"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1</span></a> for improving image acquisition of the retinal and choroidal external layers&#46; In turn&#44; DRI OCT Triton utilizes a wavelength of 1050 nm<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0025"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">2</span></a> which does not require the inclusion of EDI but utilizes instead <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">Enhanced Vitreous Visualization</span> &#40;EVV&#41; for improving the visualization of the vitreoretinal interface and the internal retina layers where image definition diminishes&#46;</p><p id="par0020" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Some of the myths and facts about SS-OCT and SD-OCT are the following&#58;<ul class="elsevierStyleList" id="lis0005"><li class="elsevierStyleListItem" id="lsti0005"><span class="elsevierStyleLabel">&#8722;</span><p id="par0025" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleItalic">SS-OCT has greater penetration than SD-OCT</span>&#58; even though it is true that SS-OCT achieves said penetration due to a higher wavelength as well as to the SS-OCT technology&#44; it is also true that SD-OCT achieves the same penetration if we activate the EDI option prior to acquiring images&#46; No differences were found between both technologies&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0030"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">3</span></a></p></li><li class="elsevierStyleListItem" id="lsti0010"><span class="elsevierStyleLabel">&#8722;</span><p id="par0030" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleItalic">SS-OCT enables En Face OCT&#58;</span> the study of frontal retina sections by means of OCT or En Face OCT &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleSmallCaps">C</span>-Scan OCT&#41; is enabled by SS-OCT&#46; However&#44; this technology is derived from SD-OCT&#46; The Cirrus<span class="elsevierStyleSup">&#174;</span> HD-OCT system &#40;Carl Zeiss Meditec&#44; Dublin&#44; CA&#44; USA&#41; was the first to include it and at present most market devices share this technology&#46;</p></li><li class="elsevierStyleListItem" id="lsti0015"><span class="elsevierStyleLabel">&#8722;</span><p id="par0035" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleItalic">SS-OCT enables longer OCT images than SD-OCT&#58;</span> the DRI OCT&#44; Triton &#40;Topcon Medical Systems Inc&#46;&#44; Oakland&#44; NJ&#44; USA&#41; allows us to carry out a scan with a maximum length of 12<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>mm &#40;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0005">Fig&#46; 1</a>&#41;&#44; similar or somewhat higher than the majority of current OCT systems&#46; However&#44; Spectralis OCT &#40;Heidelberg Engineering&#44; Heidelberg&#44; Germany&#41; at present allows a maximum OCT scan of 16&#46;5<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>mm &#40;55&#176;&#41; &#40;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0010">Fig&#46; 2</a>&#41;&#46;</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="fig0005"></elsevierMultimedia><elsevierMultimedia ident="fig0010"></elsevierMultimedia></li><li class="elsevierStyleListItem" id="lsti0020"><span class="elsevierStyleLabel">&#8722;</span><p id="par0040" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleItalic">SS-OCT enables angio-OCT &#40;OCT-A&#41;&#58;</span> OCT-A is not exclusive to the SS-OCT technology as it can be carried out with any SD-OCT system having at least 70&#44;000<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>A-scans&#47;sec&#46;</p></li></ul></p><p id="par0045" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The objective of this letter is not to be partial to any of the above technologies and devices as both are the state-of-the-art in OCT&#46; In our view&#44; SS-OCT and SD-OCT are in a &#8220;dead heat&#8221; situation and we must look to our requirements&#44; user-friendliness&#44; reproducibility&#44; reliability and software solution to decide for one or the other&#44; without considering industry marketing and pressures&#46;</p><span id="sec0005" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0005">Conflict of interests</span><p id="par0050" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">No conflict of interests was declared by the authors&#46;</p></span></span>"
