Introduction. Localized lesions in the lower pelvis present a difficult approach for both the drainage of fluids or abscesses and the performance of biopsies.
Patients and method. Over 3 years, 10 transgluteal approaches were performed through the greater sciatic hole using CT imaging as a guide. In 4 patients abscesses in the lower pelvis were drained and in one biopsy was performed, while in 5 cases fine needle punctions were carried out for diagnostic purposes.
Results. The 4 pelvic abscesses resolved sarisfactorily within a mean of 18 days, and the biopsy punctions were valid in 5/6 patients (in one case valid material was not extracted for cytologic study). The most important complication was pain (in
2 patients a strong analgesic was required).
Conclusions. Transgluteal drainage and biopsy through the greater sciatic hole by CT imaging is a relatively simple and easy procedure which greater facilitates manipulation of lesions in the lower pelvis
