Objective. A team of surgeons reports their experience in the use of a biofragmentable ring (Valtrac) sealed with fibrin (Tissucol) for gastrointestinal anastomoses. Material and methods. Biofragmentable rings with an outer diameter of 25 mm and a closed inter-ring space of 1.5 mm were employed preferentially for the esophagojejunal, jejunojejunal and ileocolic anastomoses. Valtrac rings measuring 25 to 28 mm in outer diameter with a closed inter-ring space of 1.5 mm were used for ileocolic anastomoses and rings ranging between 28 and 31 mm with a closed inter-ring space of 2 mm were employed in colocolic anastomoses.
Results. The outcome was good, there being an incidence of leak or total dehiscence of 4.5% and no cases of stenosis. Only two patients died (1.7%) as a consequence of the complications resulting from failure of the anastomosis.
Conclusions.. Our experience confirms the fact that gastrointestinal anastomoses consisting of Valtrac devices sealed with fibrin glue (Tissucol) constitute an effective method in gastrointestinal surgery
