Introduction and aims

Gene nm23-H1 is a metastasis suppressor, present in various human solid tumors. The aim of the present study was to analyze tumour expression of nm23-H1 in rectal carcinomas and its relationship with classical clinicopathologic parameters and survival.

Patients and methods

We performed a retrospective immunohistochemical and clinical study with a murine monoclonal antibody in 54 consecutive patients who underwent surgery for rectal tumors. The median follow-up was 37 months.

Results

Forty-two (77.8%) primary tumors were positive compared with only six (26.1%) metastatic lymph node tumors (p = .03). nm23-H1 expression inversely correlated with lymph node involvement (p = .05) and metastases (p = .03). No correlation was found with survival.

Conclusions

There is a lack of nm23-H1 expression in lymph node metastases from rectal cancer. Immunohistochemical detection of nm23-H1 in primary tumors is useful in predicting lymph node involvement and metastases in rectal neoplasms.
