Summary

Wilson’s disease is an autosomal recessive disorder. It is characterized by the accumulation of large quantities of copper in the organism, especially in the liver and the brain. The disease appears as a consequence of a deficit in biliary excretion of copper. The defective gene responsible for the disease is located on the 13th chromosome. It usually manifests in childhood, although never before 5 years of age, or during adolescence. More rarely in young adults it appears in the form of hepatic, neurological or psychiatric disease. A retrospective analysis was made of all cases of Wilson’s disease during pregnancy registered in our hospital from 1993 to 2003.
