Summary

Cervical incompetence is a clinical entity characterized by painless cervical dilatation which happens during the second trimester of pregnancy, with membranes bulging into the vagina. This is followed by premature rupture of the membranes and expulsion of the fetus. Recurrence in future pregnancies is typical. Treatment is surgical in the majority of cases with cervical cerclage. The diagnosis and indications por this procedure are under discussion.
