Summary

The recognition of new types of trophoblastic lesion has led to a modification of the histopathological classification of gestational trophoblastic disease. Gestational trophoblastic disease encompasses a heterogeneous group of lesions characterised by an abnormal proliferation of trophoblast. The exaggerated trophoblastic reaction to implantation corresponds with an exaggerated trophoblastic reaction at the pla-centary site, which is not neoplastic. Although it is benign, we should still make a differential diagnosis to rule out malignant lesions such as placental site trophoblastic tumour or choriocarcinoma.
