Abstract
Objective

Self-care is important in hemodialysis patients to improve health and obtain an optimal quality of life. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the self-care performed during hemodialysis therapy.

Method

This was a qualitative study with a phenomenological approach. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 10 participants with decreased kidney function that were subjected to hemodialysis. The data obtained through in-depth interviews with ten participants were analyzed using Colaizzi's method.

Results

This study revealed 5 themes, namely: (1) family support and attention, (2) therapeutic communication in services, (3) taking action swiftly and according to the rules, (4) attention and courtesy in services, and (5) supporting facilities and infrastructure.

Conclusion

Self-care and nurses are needed for improving the health of hemodialysis patients.
