The education of health workers is held to produce graduates with the number and type and quality by the guidance of the community&#46; Today there is a demand for human resources who could work professionally in all fields including health care efforts&#46; The role of health workers determines the successful implementation of development programs in the health sector to achieve the vision of a healthy Indonesia&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0090"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1</span></a></p><p id="par0010" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Clinical guidance is an educational activity carried out by the supervisor to provide real&#44; optimal knowledge and help students to achieve the expected competence&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0095"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">2&#44;3</span></a> The clinical learning process emphasizes the integration between theoretical science and practice and can find alternative solutions to problems from the cases found&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0105"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">4&#44;5</span></a></p><p id="par0015" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">One way to develop the quality of clinical learning is to apply a good Preceptorship learning method&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0115"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">6</span></a> Good practice experience while in the field will integrate all students&#8217; knowledge&#44; skills&#44; and attitudes that will become a provision for students after completion of educational institutions&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0090"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1&#44;7</span></a></p><p id="par0020" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Preceptorship is a teaching method in which a practitioner who has experience in his field could provide support to students in understanding their role and the relationship in peerhood&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0125"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">8&#44;9</span></a> The instructor who teaches&#44; provides guidance&#44; could inspire colleagues&#44; becomes role models &#40;role models&#41; to be kind and extensive knowledge&#44; and supports the growth and development of individuals &#40;trainees&#41; for a particular period time with the specific purpose of socializing trainees to his new role&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0135"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">10</span></a></p><p id="par0025" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The implementation of clinical learning activities in Indonesia still needs special attention&#46; Clinical learning methods not implemented optimally&#44; so students&#8217; ability to receive knowledge is still lacking&#46; Some problems occur in the process of clinical learning such as the ratio the instructor and the number of students who are inadequate practice&#44; job description of a clinical supervisor who still overlaps with functional assignments at work&#44; lack of training for a clinical supervisor&#44; collaboration of academic and clinical supervisors who have not yet synchronized also influenced the quality of the clinical guidance process&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0140"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">11&#44;12</span></a></p><p id="par0030" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Interventions with the preceptorship method are useful for improving student competency and development&#44; and it takes more time to evaluate competency improvement after a response has been completed to see the continuity of the results of the intervention on student competencies&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0150"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">13</span></a> Problems that occur in the clinical learning process that can affect the skills of midwifery students&#44; one of which is in examining Leopold Palpation&#46; Based on the observation in midwifery college in South Sulawesi&#44; it was found that many students did not have adequate knowledge and skill in the Leopold examination although the lesson has been explained&#46; The objective of the study was to analyze the effect of preceptorship learning methods on the knowledge and skills of Leopold palpation of midwifery diploma students&#46;</p></span><span id="sec0010" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0040">Method</span><p id="par0035" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">This research was carried out at the School of Health Sciences Midwifery Pelamonia VII Wirabuana Makassar Midwifery Study Program&#44; conducted from September to October 2019&#46; The sample in this study amounted to 40 students&#46; Previously carried out pre-test and after the intervention carried out post-test&#46;</p><p id="par0040" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The most potentially biased characteristic is the level of lecture and midwifery care courses that have been obtained&#46; All of these characteristics have been homogenized by limiting the sample only to Semester II students and have received Midwifery Care courses&#46;</p><p id="par0045" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The instrument to measure knowledge was a questionnaire containing a closed list of questions with a total of 15 questions&#44; including knowledge about Leopold&#39;s palpation&#46; This questionnaire has been tested for validity and reliability&#46; Skills are measured by observation based on professional Midwifery standards 11 items of assessment for skills&#46;</p><p id="par0050" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Preceptorship about Leopold palpation twice a time&#59; the first meeting where the preceptor first gave guidance to the preseptee&#44; which was divided into small groups of 5 people&#44; 1 group&#46; So with a total sample of 40 people&#44; eight groups will be formed&#44; and each group has one certified preceptor&#46;</p></span><span id="sec0015" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0045">Result</span><p id="par0055" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The analysis showed that there was a significant increase in knowledge &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0&#46;000&#44; <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#60;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0&#46;05&#41;&#46; Before the intervention&#44; there were no female students who had knowledge in either category&#44; as many as 37 people &#40;2&#46;5&#37;&#41; were categorized as having less knowledge and there were only 3 people &#40;7&#46;5&#37;&#41; who had enough knowledge&#46; After the intervention&#44; the data shows that 40 people &#40;100&#37;&#41; have been categorized as having good knowledge &#40;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0005">Table 1</a>&#41;&#46;</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0005"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="par0060" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The results showed that there was a significant change in skills after giving the intervention &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0&#46;000&#44; <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#60;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0&#46;000&#41;&#46; Before the intervention&#44; only nine people &#40;22&#46;5&#37;&#41; were categorized as competent but after giving the intervention that was categorized as competent 40 people &#40;100&#37;&#41; &#40;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0010">Table 2</a>&#41;&#46;</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0010"></elsevierMultimedia></span><span id="sec0020" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0050">Discussion</span><p id="par0065" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">This study found that there was a significant increase in knowledge and skills after giving the intervention &#40;preceptorship learning methods about Leopold palpation&#41;&#46; The results of this study are supported by another study that for nursing master students getting a preceptorship could improve student self-efficacy and learning outcomes&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0155"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">14</span></a> A study also conducted to students in Sweden regarding changes in competency achievement before and after the preceptorship model was applied&#46; The student competencies include increasing cognitive and psychomotor students was increased after using the preceptorship method&#46; A study in Jordan about preceptor training aimed at increasing preceptor knowledge by using experimental design was divided into two groups&#44; namely interventions that received preceptorship training and control groups that did not receive training&#46; The result is that there is no increase in knowledge in the control group&#44; whereas in the intervention group there is an increase in knowledge&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0160"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">15</span></a></p><p id="par0070" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The preceptorship method provides a clinical learning experience through a good role model from the preceptee&#46; Students will imitate the mindset practiced by the preceptor when giving midwifery care to patients&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0165"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">16</span></a> Preceptors have the potential to facilitate the clinical experience of the preseptee by encouraging reflection and increasing their ability to think critically&#46; The preceptorship clinical learning method has been considered as an attractive&#44; innovative and challenging clinical teaching strategy especially in emergencies that require proper and fast handling&#46; The results of this study also prove that the preceptorship method is effective in increasing the competence of professional nurses students&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0170"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">17</span></a></p></span><span id="sec0025" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0055">Conclusions</span><p id="par0075" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The preceptorship method is effectively used to improve the knowledge and attitudes of midwifery students about Leopold palpation&#46;</p></span><span id="sec0030" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0060">Conflict of interest</span><p id="par0080" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The authors declare no conflict of interest&#46;</p></span></span>"
