elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0065">Introduction</span><p id="par0030" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The complicated interplay between the Nubian and Eurasian plates governs the tectonically active region of North Africa, which stretches discontinuously from Morocco to Egypt. The activity of this region varies from transpression in the Atlas orogen in the west to transtension in the east. Numerous large-scale earthquakes have been reported in the region; some of these have resulted in moderate to severe damage. This is mostly because local buildings and structures are extremely vulnerable, a condition that still exists in many places,<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0005"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1</span></a> including rural area of Morocco.</p><p id="par0035" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">In fact, recently, during the evening of September 8, 2023, and into Saturday, September 9, a strong 6.9-magnitude earthquake ravaged western Morocco. The tremor's epicenter was roughly 70 km southwest of Marrakech, in the province of Al-Haouz (N31.07; W8.41). Twenty minutes later, there was an aftershock of magnitude 4.9. The areas severely affected by the earthquake are home to almost 2 million people. 50,000 houses are thought to have been completely or partially destroyed. The most recent estimates show that approximately 5500 people were hurt and over 3000 people died.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0010"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">2</span></a> In addition to the economic and social impact, mental health problems is one of five categories (with non-communicable diseases, infectious diseases, trauma and maternal and child health) of health needs during natural disaster such as earthquake.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0015"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">3,4</span></a></p><p id="par0040" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Mental health is an important aspect of public health after a disaster. Thus, surveillance for mental health variables is crucial for public health planning.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0025"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">5</span></a> In fact, adverse effects on mental health post many earthquakes was reported.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0030"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">6</span></a> For example, the Canterbury earthquakes were associated with adverse effects on mental health.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0035"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">7</span></a> Earthquakes can have a significant detrimental influence on mental health because of the stress and worry they induce due to material and human losses.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0040"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">8</span></a> According to a literature review of several studies<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0045"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">9</span></a>; despite the fact that many people expressed severe psychological distress, resilience is evident. Even if there might have been resilience mechanisms in place almost immediately following the earthquake, there might be serious medium- and long-term risks because of the long-lasting changes to everyday life and the disruption of social networks, which can be linked to mental health issues. In Syria earthquake, the majority of the population reporting probable post-traumatic stress disorder, depression or anxiety.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0050"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">10</span></a> The effect of earthquake on specific populations has also been studied. On one hand, natural disasters can have a negative impact on university learning processes and can also have devastating social, psychological and economic consequences on the learning of professional students.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0055"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">11</span></a> In the other hand, numerous studies<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0060"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">12,13</span></a> have demonstrated that healthcare workers may be more susceptible to mental health disorder; including post-traumatic stress, burnout, deterioration in quality of life, psychological stress, depression and the impact of psychological resilience because of their direct exposure to the effects of the earthquake. The increased pressure to provide emergency medical care under challenging circumstances, the stress of managing scarce resources and making rapid decisions, and the terrible memories of seeing the victims of the earthquake may all be contributing causes to these consequences.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0060"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">12,13</span></a> Nursing student as professional students in higher education may be particularly vulnerable to adverse mental health effects after an earthquake because of their potential role in emergency response and the challenges associated with providing medical care in crisis conditions. However, only one study has been found examining the mental health of nursing students in the post-earthquake period.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0070"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">14</span></a> The aim of this research was to assess the mental health of students after six months of the Moroccan earthquake and associated factors.</p></span><span id="sec0010" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0070">Methods</span><span id="sec0015" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0075">Study design & sample</span><p id="par0045" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">A cross-sectional survey of nurse students was conducted on March 2024; six months after the Moroccan earthquake. Nurse students have been involved in caring for earthquake victims, either at the site of the disaster or in hospital networks for those who have been transferred. Thus the closest nursing academic institution (ISPITS) to the epicenter of the Moroccan earthquake and its afflicted districts was included in this study. The class sampling was selected in order to give access to all five ISPITS nursing degree fields. Thus, considering the total population (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">N</span> = 1000), a 95% as confidence level, and a 5% as significance level, the minimum number of participants needed for this study was calculated to be at least 278 people using the on-line program “Survey Monkey.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0075"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">15</span></a> Thus, the questionnaire was distributed to 300 students to avoid non- completed responses or refusal response affecting the sample size. The survey period was far from the exams to neutralize any bias that might be generated during this period as a result of exam stress.</p></span><span id="sec0020" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0080">Ethical approval</span><p id="par0050" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The Marrakech Medical Research Center's regional ethics committee granted ethical permission (ref. 302/23). An authorization from the ISPITS administration was also acquired (ref. 29/23). Before the questionnaire was given out, anonymity, the students' verbal consent, and all ethical issues were ensured.</p></span><span id="sec0025" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0085">Data collection</span><p id="par0055" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The survey was divided into four sections: 1) sociodemographic data; 2) mental health (anxiety, depression, and stress) among students; 3) post-traumatic stress disorder following the earthquake; and 4) resilience status assessment. Three validated psychometric measures are used to assess on resilience and mental health after disasters.</p><p id="par0060" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The 21-item brief validated version of the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) was used in this investigation.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0080"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">16</span></a> The DASS was first developed in 1995 with 42 questions and validated in multiple languages, including Arabic language.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0085"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">17</span></a> These items are measured using a four-point (0–3) self-report severity scale with three subscales measuring stress (Items 1, 6, 8, 11, 12, 14, 18), anxiety (Items 2, 4, 7, 9, 15, 19, 20) and depression (Items 3, 5, 10, 13, 16, 17, 21) symptomology. The Lovibond & Lovibond approach was used to determine the Severity categories for each DASS category. The following are suggested thresholds for traditional severity labels: DASS-Anxiety (DASS-A) (Normal = 0–7; Mild = 8–9; Moderate = 10–14; Severe = 15–19; Extremely severe 20+), DASS-Stress (DASS-S) (Normal = 0–7; Mild = 8–9; Moderate = 10–14; Severe = 15–19; Extremely severe 20+), and DASS-Depression (DASS-D) (Normal = 0–14; Mild = 15–18; Moderate = 19–25; Severe = 26–33; Extremely severe 34+). Scores on the DASS-21 will need to be multiplied by 2 to calculate the final score.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0090"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span></a></p><p id="par0065" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The second tool was the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist-Civilian (PCL-C) with 17 items,<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0095"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">19</span></a> validated versions in different languages with 17 or 20 items including Arabic version.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0100"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">20–22</span></a> Items are measured using a five-point (1–5), Scores can range from 17 to 85. Higher scores indicate greater impairment. In this study, scores larger than 35 were utilized to identify which scores fell outside the "normal" range.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0070"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">14</span></a></p><p id="par0070" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) is a 25-item,<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0115"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">23</span></a> with Arabic version to women<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0120"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">24</span></a> and university students,<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0125"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">25</span></a> The short Arabic version of CD-RISC used in the present research comprises 10 items,<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0130"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">26</span></a> each of which are scored on a 5-point scale ranging from 0 (not true at all) to 4 (true nearly all of the time). Scores range from 0 to 40, higher scores on the CD-RISC-10 indicate higher levels of resilience.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0070"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">14</span></a> We considered the scores above to 30 as high levels of resilience in qualitative description.</p><p id="par0075" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The questionnaire was tested with 30 students, who were excluded from the sample. The average response time was between 15 and 30 min.</p></span><span id="sec0030" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0090">Data analysis</span><p id="par0080" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">After the collected data had been entered and coded in SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) software (IBM; version 24.0), a deductive and descriptive analysis was carried out. Frequencies and percentages were used to present the descriptive data. In addition, the mean, standard deviation, median and interquartile range were used to describe the central distribution of the data. Correlation between scales and an exploratory analysis to investigate potential differences between the characteristics of the study population and the scale scores were also performed. The normality of the distribution was verified using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The Mann-Whitney <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">U</span> test was used for data with a non-Gaussian distribution. Finally, the Cronbach alpha coefficient was calculated to verify the reliability of results in the Moroccan context.</p></span></span><span id="sec0035" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0095">Results</span><span id="sec0040" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0100">Population’s characteristics</span><p id="par0085" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The total of 261 completed questionnaire were obtained among 300 contacted invidious with response rate of 87%, the age of population ranged from 17 to 33 years with the average of 1958 years and Standard Deviation of 2117 years. As showed in <a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0005">Table 1</a>, our population was predominantly female (80.1%; <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span> = 209), with participants from disaster areas making up 29.9% (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span> = 78). The majority of respondents lived with their families (72.4%; <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span> = 189). Nursing care students accounted for 82.4% (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span> = 215), while third-year students accounted for no more than 11.5% (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span> = 30) of all participants. Almost all respondents (96.9%; <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span> = 253) had experienced the earthquake, with only 1.1% (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span> = 3) having lost a family member in this natural disaster and 23.4% (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span> = 61) having suffered material damage to their household.</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0005"></elsevierMultimedia></span><span id="sec0045" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0105">Descriptive scores results</span><p id="par0090" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The study of the data normality performed by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test showed that the values of the present scores do not follow a normal distribution, which implies the use of specific non-parametric tests for further analysis of both correlation and association. In addition, the results showed that all the items of these scales used have a high reliability in the Moroccan context, as demonstrated by the values of the Cronbach alpha coefficient, which exceeds 0.87 in all the scales. Anxiety of various degrees (Mild; Moderate; Severe; Extremely severe) was present in 44.8% of participants, with an average of 7.22 and a median of 7. Depression of degree (mild and moderate) affected 37.1% of students, while the average and median reported for the study population were 7.55 and 7 respectively. Stress of the Mild and Moderate type was reported by only 7.7% of the students, with a mean of 6.89 and a median of 6. Students in the abnormal post-traumatic stress rank exceeded half of the participants (61.3%), with a mean of 40.7 and a median of 38. Finally, our results showed that only a minority of students obtained the high resilience score (13.8%) with a mean of 21.04 and a median of 22 (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0010">Table 2</a>). The correlation between the different scales showed a positive association between all the values of the scales used, with the exception of the resilience assessment scale, which had a negative correlation coefficient with all the scales (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0015">Table 3</a>).</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0010"></elsevierMultimedia><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0015"></elsevierMultimedia></span><span id="sec0050" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0110">Associated factors to mental health of nursing students</span><p id="par0095" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The results showed that age significantly affects the mental health of nursing students, in fact the DAS scale (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.034) and more specifically the anxiety scale (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.018) correlated negatively with age, meaning that older students obtained the lowest scores signifying normal values of anxiety. Furthermore, with the exception of the resilience scale, the female gender obtained higher medians than the male gender for all the scales with a significant difference in the DAS scale score and more specifically in the anxiety and stress score (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> < 0.05). Similarly Students living with their families had a higher median resilience score than other students living alone or in shared accommodation, showing a significant difference (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.042). In addition, year of study and losing a family member in the earthquake significantly affected the DASS scale (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> < 0.05), with tertiary students and those who had lost a family member in the natural disaster having a higher median score than students in other grades and those who reported not having lost a family member. Thus, the association was significant between the year of the study and all the DAS sub-scales: depression (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.007), stress (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.007) and anxiety (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.003). It was also significant between the fact of losing a family member and these different depression (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.047), stress (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.006) and anxiety (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.021) scales. Finally, the post-traumatic stress scale was only affected by material damage, in fact the students who had declared material damage in their households were those who had higher median (PCL) Checklist scores with a significant difference from the students who had not declared such damage (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.044). However, this study did not establish any association between the mental health of nursing students and attending and experiencing the phenomenon or living near earthquake foci (provenence) (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0020">Table 4</a>).</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0020"></elsevierMultimedia></span></span><span id="sec0055" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0115">Discussion</span><p id="par0100" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The present research highlighted the significant impact of the earthquake on the nursing student mental health, using a three validated psychometric measures: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PCL-C), Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21), and The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) to assess the nursing student mental health after Moroccan earthquake. The data collection scales were carefully chosen by analyzing the mental health variables most studied in natural disasters, and by consulting previous studies examining the validity and reliability of these tools in Arab contexts. This choice of scale, translated and adapted to the Arab context,<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0085"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">17,21,26</span></a> was substantially reflected in the high reliability of the scales and all items used in the Moroccan context from the present results.</p><p id="par0105" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Anxiety was present in 44.8% of participants. Depression affected 37.1% of students. Stress was reported by only 7.7% of the students. Students in the abnormal post-traumatic stress rank exceeded half of the participants (61.3%). Finally, our results showed that only a minority of students obtained the high resilience score (13.8%). These shocking findings regarding the mental health conditions of nursing students can be explained by two things: either there was a lack of interest in mental health as an essential component of care that shouldn't be disregarded in favor of medical and surgical procedures, or there was a lack of awareness among university students—and especially among those in the health professions—of the need to prepare for natural disasters. Indeed, the stigma of mental health prevents people from seeking mental health care.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0135"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">27</span></a> The most pressing demands in an earthquake situation are immediate medical care, physical care, and emergency supplies.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0045"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">9</span></a> In disaster situations like earthquakes, immediate medical and physical care, along with emergency supplies, are prioritized.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0045"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">9</span></a> However, it's equally crucial to ensure mental health support for both first responders and affected populations. For instance, in Croatia, a community mental health team effectively provided accessible services post-disaster, aiding individuals with serious mental illnesses.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0140"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">28</span></a> Despite efforts in Haiti to integrate mental health support, there's a need for further development, as primary healthcare providers' practices remain unchanged and orientation systems are still in their early stages.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0030"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">6</span></a></p><p id="par0110" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Similar to the findings of another study conducted following the 2010 New Zealand earthquake,<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0070"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">14</span></a> the correlation between the different scales was positive, except to the resilience assessment scale, which had a negative correlation coefficient with all the scales. In fact, this is a coherent result, since having high scores in (PCL-C), (DASS-21), is consistent with low resilience (CD-RISC) scores, which in both cases indicated an alteration in psychological statute.</p><p id="par0115" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The results showed that the DAS scale and more specifically the anxiety scale correlated negatively with age, meaning that older students obtained the lowest scores signifying normal values of anxiety. Indeed, age is an inherent assumption that resilience can increase with age,<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0070"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">14</span></a> despite that in a review of the Canterbury earthquake literature; There are relative gaps in knowledge about long-term outcomes and outcomes for infant and elderly populations.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0035"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">7</span></a> Furthermore, in the present study, the female gender obtained higher score in the anxiety and stress scales. These results corroborated a study showing that the need for long-term mental health support two years after an earthquake was higher in women than in men.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0145"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">29</span></a> This is can be explained by Cultural and social pressures specific to women in arabic contexts, including high expectations regarding family and domestic responsibilities in addition to academic and professional demands, may contribute to higher levels of stress and anxiety. The results highlighted also that students living with their families had a higher resilience score than other students. In fact, social cohesion in the aftermath of the earthquake has reduced psychiatric hospitalization and suicide cases in Ecuador.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0040"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">8</span></a> The post-traumatic stress scale was only impacted by material damage; similarly, another finding indicated that those who had experienced more severe house destruction that required them to leave their home were more in need of long-term mental health support.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0145"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">29</span></a> Losing a family member in the earthquake also significantly affected the DASS scale. This can be explained by people by the period of the survey not exceeding six month. Loss of family or friends was no longer associated with depression three years after the disaster; survivors of the 2011 earthquake appear to have recovered from the loss of their loved ones. In contrast, material loss was associated with a persistent negative impact on mental health.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0150"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">30</span></a> In sum, Almost similar results were recently found in Syria showing The worst mental health outcomes were associated with being female, single, younger, having a damaged or destroyed house.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0050"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">10</span></a></p><p id="par0120" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">In addition, year of study, with 3rd grade students (as final year for the nursing diploma) having a higher median score than students in other grades in all the DAS sub-scales: depression stress and anxiety. This can be explained that 3rd grade students have contributed to case management in hospitals and health facilities. According to several studies, the experience of health professionals in dealing with earthquakes substantially affects their mental health.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0065"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">13,14</span></a></p><p id="par0125" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Finally, this study did not establish any association between the mental health of nursing students and attending the phenomenon that can be explained by the small number who did not attend or feel the earthquake impacting the variability of this factor in the present study. There was no association also between the mental health of nursing students and the fact to living near earthquake foci, contrarily to another study having demonstrated A greater number of participants in severely damaged regions reported depressive symptoms compared to moderately and slightly damaged regions, this can be explained by people who have seen or heard tragic situations showing the worst mental health outcomes.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0050"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">10</span></a></p><p id="par0130" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Therefore, in addition to undergoing mental health assessments before and after events, health professionals and future health professionals who are expected to provide disaster relief must also undergo the required training in stress management, psychological resilience and emotional expressiveness.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0065"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">13</span></a> Emphasis is placed on the need to monitor students' needs before and after disasters. Urges higher education institutions to prioritize students' mental health to ensure their academic success. Encourages proactive interventions such as training students and staff in resilience-building techniques.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0070"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">14</span></a> Similarly, non-governmental organizations and the World Health Organization country office must continue to support the mental health of health workers, particularly in times of disaster, such as Nepal.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0155"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">31</span></a></p></span><span id="sec0060" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0120">Conclusion</span><p id="par0135" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">This study highlighted the prevalence of mental disorders among nursing students, in addition to a diminished capacity for resilience, and high stress scores for depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress after 6 months of shock. Age, gender, family support and the loss of a family member and material losses during this disaster are factors that had an impact on the psychological health of these students in Morocco, which underlines the need to take into account the specificity of the population exposed to these factors and their susceptibility in post-earthquake care. On the other hand, the post-earthquake and disaster response in general must accelerate progress of the emotional management in health universities Therefore, our study suggests the importance of investing in mental health resources tailored to the unique needs of nursing students. This includes targeted interventions, increased access to counseling services, and improved mental health education within nursing curricula. Additionally, there is a need for further research to understand the underlying factors contributing to mental health challenges among nursing students and to inform evidence-based strategies for intervention and support. Thus, surveillance for mental health variables is crucial for public health planning. Nursing students as professional students may be particularly vulnerable to adverse mental health effects after an earthquake because of their potential role in emergency response and the challenges associated with providing medical care in crisis conditions. The aim of this research was to assess the mental health of students after six months of the Moroccan earthquake and associated factors.</p></span> <span id="abst0010" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0015">Method</span><p id="spar0035" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">A cross-sectional survey of student nurses was conducted on March 2024; six months after the Moroccan earthquake in front to 261 students using class sampling method. Three validated psychometric measures, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PCL-C), Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21), and The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) were used to assess the nursing student mental health after Moroccan earthquake.</p></span> <span id="abst0015" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0020">Results</span><p id="spar0040" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">Anxiety, Depression, Stress and abnormal post-traumatic stress rank was present respectively in 44.8%, 37.1%, 7.7%, 61.3% of participants. However, a minority of students obtained the high resilience score (13.8%). The results showed that the DAS scale correlated negatively with age (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.034). However, the high level of scores resilience obtained significantly for students living with their families. Los estudiantes de enfermería, como estudiantes profesionales, pueden ser particularmente vulnerables a los efectos adversos sobre la salud mental después de un terremoto debido a su papel potencial en la respuesta de emergencia y los desafíos asociados a la prestación de atención médica en condiciones de crisis. El objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar la salud mental de los estudiantes transcurridos seis meses del terremoto de Marruecos y los factores asociados.</p></span> <span id="abst0030" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0040">Método</span><p id="spar0055" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">Se realizó una encuesta transversal a estudiantes de enfermería en marzo de 2024, seis meses después del terremoto de Marruecos a 261 estudiantes utilizando el método de muestreo por clases. Se utilizaron tres medidas psicométricas validadas: Trastorno de estrés postraumático (PCL-C), Escala de depresión, ansiedad y estrés (DASS-21) y Escala de resiliencia de Connor-Davidson (CD-RISC) para evaluar la salud mental de los estudiantes de enfermería tras el terremoto de Marruecos.</p></span> <span id="abst0035" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0045">Resultados</span><p id="spar0060" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">La ansiedad, la depresión, el estrés y el rango anormal de estrés postraumático estaban presentes respectivamente en el 44,8, 37,1, 7,7 y 61,3% de los participantes. Sin embargo, una minoría de estudiantes obtuvo la puntuación de resiliencia alta (13.8%). Los resultados mostraron que la escala DAS correlacionaba negativamente con la edad (p = 0,034). Además, el género femenino, los estudiantes de 3er grado (como último curso de la diplomatura de enfermería) y los que habían perdido a un familiar en la catástrofe natural obtuvieron medianas más altas con una diferencia significativa en la puntuación de la escala DAS (p < 0.05). La escala de estrés postraumático sólo se vio afectada por los daños materiales (p = 0,044). Sin embargo, el alto nivel de las puntuaciones de resiliencia fue obtenido significativamente por los estudiantes que vivían con sus familias. Por el contrario, no se observó ninguna asociación entre la salud mental de los estudiantes de enfermería y la asistencia al fenómeno o el hecho de vivir cerca de los focos del terremoto.</p></span>
