Uno de los objetivos de este trabajo es la justificación de la parcela terapéutica específica que compete al fisioterapeuta en la disfunción de la articulación temporomandibular (ATM) y de las estructuras y funciones que con ella se relacionan1. Según algunos autores, la patología de la ATM puede situarse en un porcentaje próximo al 20% de la población sana. Otros autores apuntan a que existe una prevalencia de más del 50% de este tipo de disfunciones entre los pacientes que acuden a consulta dental2.
Aunque son muchos los casos que van a tener un silencio clínico, bajo determinadas situaciones se va a producir el agravamiento de la situación silente y a desencadenar cualquiera de los múltiples aspectos patológicos de este síndrome.
Se ven implicados, y a veces de manera «inconexa», determinados profesionales de la medicina: otorrinos, neurólogos, traumatólogos, y dentro del campo estomatognático: dentistas, odontólogos, así como especialistas en dolor miofascial. Otros profesionales de la salud van a tratar las patologías asociadas conésta, como son: psiquiatras, psicólogos, logopedas y, motivo de este artículo, fisioterapeutas. En ese amplio marco terapéutico se hace necesario el abordaje interdisciplinar, que debe comenzar por el reconocimiento de las distintas parcelas terapéuticas que confluyen en el entorno de esta patología.
Justification of the specific therapeutic field that competes to the physiotherapist in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction and of the structures and functions related to it. According to some authors, temporomandibular joint dysfunction can be placed in almost 50% of healthy population. Some others affirm that there is a prevalence of more than the 50% of this kind of dysfunctions among of the patients who go to dental surgery.
Although there are lots of cases that have a clinical silence, under determined situations, it is going to bring about a worsening of the silent situation and to carry to the appearance of any of the various pathological aspects of this syndrome.
They are involved, and sometimes in an «unconnected» way, determined professionals of medicine: otolaryngologists, neurologists, traumatologists and, from the stomatognatic sphere: dentists, stomatologists, anyway specialists in myofascial pain. Others professionals of healt are going to treat all the pathologies associated with this dysfunction as: psychiatrists, psychologists, speech therapists, and cause of this article, physiotherapists. In this broad therapeutic setting becomes needing the multidisciplinary raising, which must begin with by the recognition of the different therapeutic fields which there are around this pathology’s context.
