Abstract

The Delphi method is the most widely used method to achieve consensus.

In this method, a panel of experts evaluates a set of items privately and anonymously during several rounds. In each new round, the experts evaluate the same elements (and are able to change their responses or comments) but are aware of the opinions expressed in the previous round by the other members of the panel; in this way, the opinions show a tendency to converge in each round. The results are subsequently analyzed and a document is drafted containing an analysis of the results obtained.

The uses of this method in health include prognosis, decision-making in situations where the information and available evidence are insufficiently conclusive, and as support in the formulation of recommendations in clinical practice guidelines.
