mayo de este año se ha celebrado el 21 Congreso Americano de Hipertensión Arterial. En él ha habido debates y sesiones científicas en las que se han revisado aspectos de interés y novedades en la evaluación y tratamiento de los pacientes hipertensos. Hay que destacar debates en torno al síndrome metabólico, a los trastornos metabólicos relacionados con algunos fármacos antihipertensivos, a la prevención de la diabetes y a la utilización de los betabloqueantes en el primer escalón del tratamiento de la hipertensión y el valor pronóstico de la hipertensión enmascarada y la hipertensión de bata blanca. Por otra parte, también se ha hablado del papel de la inflamación en la patogenia del proceso aterosclerótico y se puso de manifiesto el interés de utilizar estrategias para medir la función vascular, destacándose la utilización de técnicas como la velocidad de la onda del pulso, el índice tobillo-brazo y el índice de aumento. Algunas de las novedades a destacar han sido la posible utilidad de un fármaco en la prevención de la hipertensión, una nueva diana terapéutica como la inhibición de la renina y la posible relación de una hormona, sintetizada en el riñón y que interviene en el catabolismo de las catecolaminas, con la enfermedad cardiovascular.
In May of this year, the 21st American Congress of AHT was held. There were debates and scientific sessions in it in which aspects of interest and novelties in the evaluation and treatment of hypertensive patients were reviewed. Debates on metabolic syndrome, metabolic disorders related with some antihypertensive drugs, to the prevention of diabetes and use of beta blockers in the first treatment step of hypertension and prognostic value of masked hypertension and white coat hypertension must be stressed. On the other hand, the role of inflammation in the pathogeny of the atherosclerotic condition was spoken about and the interest for using strategies to measure the vascular function was manifested. Techniques such as pulse wave rate, ankle-arm index and increase index stood out. Some of the novelties to stress were possible utility of a drug in the prevention of hypertension, a new therapeutic target such as the inhibition of renin and the possible relationship of a hormone, synthesized in the kidney and that intervenes in the catabolism of catecholamines, with cardiovascular disease.
