lymphomas are lymphomas that develop on the skin, with no evidence of extracutaneous disease at the time of diagnosis.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0005"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1</span></a> They represent approximately 19% of extranodal lymphomas, with an estimated incidence of 1:100,000.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0005"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1</span></a> About 75% correspond to cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL), and of these the most common variety is mycosis fungoides, accounting for almost 50% of total cutaneous lymphomas.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0010"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">2</span></a></p><p id="par0010" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The vast majority of lymphomas diagnosed in public health centres in Chile are referred to a centralized histopathology laboratory by the National Program of Adult Antineoplastic Drugs (PANDA) in order to carry out a histological and immunohistochemical diagnosis.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0015"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">3</span></a></p><p id="par0015" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">This study aims to identify the distribution, frequency and demographic factors of CTCLs diagnosed between 2006 and 2012 from the PANDA registry.</p><p id="par0020" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Data were obtained from patients with a diagnosis of CTCL referred by PANDA for a histopathological study, from 17 hospitals in the public health services network between 2006 and 2012, constituting a nationally representative sample.</p><p id="par0025" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">151 cases were analysed, 46.4% were female patients and 53.6% male, with an average age of 60.15 ± 15.41 years. No significant differences were found between the average age of both sexes (p = 0.109).</p><p id="par0030" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Regarding CTCL subtypes, 30.5% corresponded to mycosis fungoides, 23.2% to cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (not specified), 17.9% to cutaneous anaplastic large-cell lymphoma, 11.9 % to NK/T-cell extranodal nasal-type lymphoma, 9.3% to CD4+ small/medium-sized pleomorphic T-cell lymphoma, 3.3% to lymphomatoid papulosis, 2.6% to panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma and 1, 3% to adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0005">Table 1</a>).</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0005"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="par0035" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">There were no significant differences between the age averages of the different CTCL subtypes (p = 0.282), nor was there a significant association between sex and the different CTCL subtypes (p = 0.276).</p><p id="par0040" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">After the multivariate analysis, the significant risk assessors were female sex and mycosis fungoides (OR = 2.72; p = 0.03), female sex and CD4+ small/medium-sized pleomorphic T-cell lymphoma (OR = 3.91; p = 0.04), and age and panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (OR = 0.94; p = 0.04).</p><p id="par0045" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">A percentage close to 12% of NK/T-cell extranodal nasal type lymphoma was observed, high in comparison to other international series that report between <1 and 7.5%.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0005"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1</span></a> This type of CTCL has been associated with positive serologies for the Epstein-Barr virus.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0020"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">4</span></a> In Chile, the seroprevalence of this virus reaches 76.7%, with levels close to 90% at the beginning of the third decade of life, thus being among the countries with the highest seroprevalence.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0025"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">5</span></a></p><p id="par0050" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Statistically significant risk assessors were obtained through the multivariate analysis with multinomial logistic regression. In the case of mycosis fungoides, a high risk was obtained in female patients compared to men, close to 172% (OR: 2.72), adjusted for age. Similar results were obtained for cases of CD4+ small/medium-sized pleomorphic T-cell lymphoma, in which female patients were 290% (OR: 3.9) more likely to have this type of lymphoma. This could be explained by a clinical perception that women tend to seek medical help earlier for health problems and, therefore, this association and risk estimation would require further studies in this regard.</p><p id="par0055" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Finally, the present study corresponds to the first nationwide study in Chile that involves an epidemiological analysis and classifies cutaneous T-cell lymphomas according to EORTC-WHO, including all patients treated in the public health system at national level referred to the PANDA program during the period 2006–2012.</p><p id="par0060" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The multiple results shown here are consistent with data reported in other international studies, with mycosis fungoides being the most common CTCL.
