Fundamento

Determinar la prevalencia decatéteres venosos periféricos innecesariosen un servicio de urgencias.

Método

Estudio retrospectivo sobre unamuestra de 1.113 pacientes del total(24.673) que acudieron a urgencias. Se revisaronlas vías venosas canalizadas y sifueron o no utilizadas.

Resultados

Se practicó acceso venoso en202 pacientes (18,15%). En 84 (41,6%)no fue utilizado. El coste económico de lasvías innecesarias ascendió a 10.264,33 euros.

Conclusión

Los accesos venosos periféricosfrecuentemente son utilizados innecesariamente,generando un coste de «mala calidad».

Background

To determine the incidence ofunnecessary cannulations of peripheralveins in an Emergency Department (ED).

Methods

We retrospectively analyzed asample of 1,113 patients from a total of 24,637 who were attended at ED. We reviewedthe cannulations of peripheral veinsand if they was used or not.

Results

In 202 (18.5%) cases, venous accesswas obtained. In 84 (41.6%) the venousaccess was not used.

Conclusion

The unnecessary use of venouscannulations is a common practice and generatesa substantial added cost of poorquality.
