Fundamento

Conocer y comparar la incidenciade flebitis relacionada con la administraciónintravenosa de los antibióticosmacrólidos eritromicina y claritromicina.

Pacientes y método

Estudio prospectivo noaleatorizado de pacientes consecutivos ingresadospor neumonía comunitaria y tratadoscon macrólidos intravenosos (19 coneritromicina y 25 conclaritromicina).

Resultados

La proporción de flebitis en lostratados con eritromicina fue del 78,9% (incidenciade 0,40 episodios/paciente-día) yen los tratados con claritromicina del 76%(incidencia de 0,35 episodios/paciente-día).

Conclusiones

El riesgo de flebitis es muyelevado y similar con la administración intravenosade ambos macrólidos.

Background

To know and to compare theincidence of phlebitis due to intravenousadministration of macrolide antibioticserythromycin and clarithromycin.

Patients and method

Non-randomized prospectivestudy of consecutive patients whowere diagnosed of community pneumonia andtreated with intravenous macrolides (19 witherythromycin and 25 with clarithromycin).

Results

The cumulative incidence of phlebitisin patients treated with erythromycinwas 78.9% (incidence rate of 0.40 episodes/patient-day) and in those treated withclarithromycin 76% (incidence rate of 0.35episodes/patient-day).

Conclusions

The risk of phlebitis is highand similar with intravenous administrationof both macrolides.
