Abstract

The expansion of the amniotic sac from the fifth to the fourteenth week of pregnancy correlates with changes in the embryonic surface. We describe a 6-week pregnancy in which ultrasonographic images demonstrated both the amniotic and yolk sacs without an embryonic pole. We speculate on the mechanism that allowed the accumulation of amniotic fluid in the absence of an embryo.
