Summary
Introduction

The alpha-delta rhythm is an alteration that appears in the electroencephalographic recording of sleep in patients with fibromyalgia. We aim to assess the clinical evolution of a group of fibromyalgic patients, to know the incidence of the alpha-delta rhythm and to verify if the cases which have this pattern present their own clinical characteristics.

Material and methods

We performed an encephalographic recording of sleep obtained in the home for 21 fibromyalgic patients between 1997 and 1999. In addition, they were interviewed by telephone to know their clinical evolution, collect data on different variables (pain, fatigue, sleep and functional capacity) and to compare them with the results of the sleep recording.

Results

A mild improvement after treatment was verified in all the clinical variables studies, with statistical significance in the sleep variables and pain intensity. Ten patients (48%) presented alpha-delta rhythm in the spectral recording of the sleep electroencephalogram.

Conclusions

In the time covered by the study, a significant percentage of the sample studied reported subjective clinical improvement. Although statistically significant levels were not obtained, the group of patients with alpha-delta rhythm showed a greater degree of improvement.
