El 0,1 al 2,5% de los pacientes diabéticos se verá afectado por una neuroartropatía en el pie. Del 3 al 10% de los mismos se localizará en tobillo. En esta localización, la inestabilidad es severa y predispone a desarrollar ulceraciones y osteomielitis. Un tratamiento adecuado de esta afección puede evitar una amputación mayor. La artrodesis con clavo intramedular está demostrando altas tasas de unión y previniendo amputaciones mayores. En casos en los que la destrucción del astrágalo es severa, la artrodesis con la interposición de homoinjerto obtenido de la cabeza femoral se plantea como una opción viable.

The 0,1 to 2,5% of diabetic patients will be affected by a neuroarthropathy in the foot. From 3 to 10% of them will be located in the ankle. At this location the instability is severe and predisposes to developing ulcerations and osteomyelitis. Proper treatment of this condition can prevent major amputation. Arthrodesis with intramedullary nail is showing high rates of union and prevention of mayor amputations. In cases where the destruction of talus is severe, arthrodesis with interpositional allogenic femoral head is seen as a viable option.
