and primary breast neuroendocrine carcinoma &#40;PBNEC&#41; are rare types of breast carcinomas&#46; They represent about 1&#8211;2&#37; of all invasive breast malignancies&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0145"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1&#44;2</span></a> Apocrine cells are characterized by abundant eosinophilic and granular cytoplasm&#44; large centrally located nuclei&#44; and distinctive cell borders with the characteristic androgen receptor &#40;AR&#41; positive&#44; generally estrogen receptor &#40;ER&#41; and progesterone receptor &#40;PR&#41; negative steroidal profile&#46; Overexpression of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 &#40;HER2&#41; and epidermal growth factor receptor &#40;EGFR&#41; are also frequently documented&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0145"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1</span></a> Morphological differentiation in PBNECs is more difficult&#46; PBNECs are more likely to have ER&#47;PR&#43;&#44; HER2&#8722; profile&#46; PBNEC diagnosis is based mainly on the expression of the neuroendocrine markers&#44; including synaptophysin or chromogranin&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0155"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">3&#44;4</span></a> According to the classification by the World Health Organization &#40;WHO&#41; in 2012&#44; PBNECs are divided into 3 groups&#58; well-differentiated&#44; poorly differentiated&#44; and invasive breast carcinomas with neuroendocrine differentiation&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0155"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">3</span></a> The available knowledge about the diagnosis and management of these aggressive tumors is limited in published data&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0155"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">3&#44;5</span></a> Histopathological examinations are widely accepted as the gold standard for ABC and PBNEC&#44; due to the diagnostic difficulties by conventional imaging methods&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0145"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1&#44;3</span></a></p><p id="par0010" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">In recent years&#44; <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG PET&#47;CT has been documented and widely used as a useful imaging modality for in vivo glucose hypermetabolism particularly in pretherapeutic staging and in detecting metastases of breast carcinomas&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0170"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">6</span></a> The maximum standardized uptake value &#40;SUVmax&#41; levels were significantly associated with the tumor diameter&#44; histological type&#44; higher histological grades&#44; Ki-67 index&#44; hormone receptor status&#44; relapse&#44; and prognosis&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0175"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">7&#8211;9</span></a> The relationship between <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG uptake and histopathological tumor types has been demonstrated in breast cancers&#46; The highest uptake values were determined in apocrine and invasive ductal carcinomas&#44; while the lowest <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG uptake was obtained in lobular type breast cancer&#46; In addition&#44; the association among <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG uptake and ER and PR receptor negativity&#44; HER2 receptor positivity and high Ki-67 expression was reported&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0190"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">10</span></a> In the present study&#44; we aimed to analyze <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG uptake patterns of patients with ABC and PBNEC&#44; and to compare them with invasive ductal carcinoma &#40;IDC&#41;&#46; In addition&#44; we aimed to evaluate the role of <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG PET&#47;CT in ABC and PBNEC staging&#46;</p></span><span id="sec0010" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0070">Materials and methods</span><span id="sec0015" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0075">Patients</span><p id="par0015" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">A total of 570 patients&#8217; &#40;585 lesions&#41; files who were operated on&#44; or had undergone true-cut or fine needle aspiration biopsies in our institution&#44; between March 2009 and May 2018&#44; were included in this study&#46; Five hundred and sixty six &#40;99&#46;3&#37;&#41; of them were female and 4 &#40;0&#46;7&#37;&#41; were male&#44; with a mean age of 54&#46;5<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#177;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>13&#46;3 &#40;range<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>23&#8211;88&#41; years&#46; Fifteen patients were diagnosed with bilateral tumors&#46; Histopathological analysis and <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG PET&#47;CT imaging were performed preoperatively for all 585 lesions&#46; Our retrospective study was approved by the local ethics committee &#40;2015&#47;598&#41;&#44; and all patients were asked for their verbal or written consent for the use of their individual clinical findings for research purposes&#46;</p></span><span id="sec0020" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0080">Histological analysis</span><p id="par0020" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Primary breast cancer diagnosis and histopathological analysis were based on tissue samples derived by cut-cut biopsy or fine-needle aspiration biopsy before PET&#47;CT imaging&#44; or by excisional biopsy&#44; breast-sparing surgery&#44; or radical mastectomy after PET&#47;CT imaging&#46; For histological staging&#44; the Scarff Bloom Richardson &#40;SBR&#41; classification system was used&#46; The equal and more than 10&#37; positivity of ER and PR receptors were accepted as positive by immunohistochemical &#40;IHC&#41; staining in tumor tissues&#46; HER2 scoring was performed as follows&#58;<ul class="elsevierStyleList" id="lis0005"><li class="elsevierStyleListItem" id="lsti0005"><span class="elsevierStyleLabel">-</span><p id="par0025" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Score 0 &#40;negative&#41;&#58; Lesions observed with negative immunostaining&#46;</p></li><li class="elsevierStyleListItem" id="lsti0010"><span class="elsevierStyleLabel">-</span><p id="par0030" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Score 1&#58; Weak staining&#44; or staining in less than 30&#37; of the tumor cells&#46;</p></li><li class="elsevierStyleListItem" id="lsti0015"><span class="elsevierStyleLabel">-</span><p id="par0035" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Score 2&#58; primary breast masses were reported in terms of their dimension&#44; location&#44; and quantity &#40;multicentricity&#44; multifocality&#41;&#59; SUVmax&#59; and the distant nodal and organ metastases status according to PET&#47;CT results&#46; Patients with blood glucose levels lower than 150<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>mg&#47;dL after at least 6<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>h of fasting were admitted for the procedure&#46; Standard 3&#46;7&#8211;5&#46;2<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>MBq&#47;kg <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG intravenous injection was administered to the patients&#46; Whole-body PET&#47;CT imaging was obtained&#44; including the area from vertex to upper femur while the patients were in supine position 60<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>min after IV injection &#40;first 108 imaging performed by Siemens Biograph 6 HD LSO&#44; and later 462 imaging performed by Siemens mCT 20 ultra HD LSO PET&#47;CT &#91;Siemens Molecular Imaging&#59; Hoffman Estates&#44; IL&#44; USA&#93;&#41;&#46; For SUVmax calculation&#44; regions of interest &#40;ROI&#41;&#44; which included the location of highest uptake&#44; were drawn on PET cross-sections&#46; SUVmax was calculated according to the following formula&#58; maximum activity inside the ROI &#40;MBq&#47;g&#41;&#47;injected FDG dosage&#47;body weight &#40;MBq&#47;kg&#41;&#46;</p></span><span id="sec0030" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0090">Statistical analysis</span><p id="par0080" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">All data were analyzed with SPSS &#40;Statistical Package for the Social Sciences&#41; software for Windows &#40;v21&#46;0&#59; IBM&#44; Armonk&#44; NY&#44; USA&#41;&#46; Individual and aggregate data were summarized using descriptive statistics&#44; including mean&#44; standard deviations&#44; medians &#40;min&#8211;max&#41;&#44; frequency distributions&#44; and percentages&#46; Normality of data distribution was verified by Kolmogorov&#8211;Smirnov test&#46; Comparison of the variables with normal distribution was made with the Student&#39;s <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">t</span>-test&#46; Evaluation of categorical variables was performed by Chi-square test&#46; The kappa statistic was calculated to evaluate the agreement&#46; <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span>-Values of &#60;0&#46;05 were considered statistically significant&#46;</p></span></span><span id="sec0035" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0095">Results</span><p id="par0085" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Invasive ductal carcinoma was the most frequent breast carcinoma&#44; with a rate of 77&#46;7&#37; &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>446&#41; &#40;mean<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#177;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>SD&#59; 54&#46;0<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#177;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>13&#46;1 years&#41; in our study group&#46; Apocrine type breast cancer at 4&#46;1&#37; &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>24&#41;&#44; and 2&#46;4&#37; &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>14&#41; PBNEC were diagnosed&#46; The remaining 101 lesions had other histopathological types of breast cancer &#40;invasive lobular&#44; mucinous&#44; mixed&#44; etc&#46;&#41;&#46; The mean age of ABC patients was 55&#46;5<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#177;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>11&#46;2 &#40;range<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>38&#8211;81&#41; and 67&#46;9<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#177;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>12&#46;1 &#40;range<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>47&#8211;85&#41; years in PBNEC patients&#46; The mean age in the ABC group was similar the IDC&#44; and there was no significant difference between the two groups &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0&#46;29&#41;&#46; The rate of positive ER and PR receptors was found to be statistically higher in the IDC group than in the ABC group &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0&#46;012 and <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0&#46;016&#44; the mean SUVmax in the Luminal A subtype was lower than the Luminal B subtype&#44; but no statistically significant difference was found between two subtypes &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0&#46;1&#41;&#46; Additionally&#44; there was no statistically significant difference between IDC and PBNEC groups comparison for Luminal A and Luminal B subtypes &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0&#46;259 and <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0&#46;488&#44; respectively&#41;&#46;</p></span><span id="sec0040" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0100">Discussion</span><p id="par0120" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Apocrine type tumors of breast and PBNEC are rare tumors&#44; and a limited number of articles have been published in the literature and most of them consist of case reports or brief reports&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0155"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">3&#44;11</span></a> Kitajima et al&#46; reported a ratio of 0&#46;64&#37; &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>2&#41; ABC in 306 patients&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0200"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">12</span></a> These ratio remained similar in a study conducted with 89 cases by Miyake et al&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0205"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">13</span></a> On the other hand&#44; at the University of Helsinki&#44; reported 0&#46;1&#37; of cases of PBNEC in 1367 cases&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0150"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">2</span></a> However&#44; compared to published articles&#44; the rate of patients with ABC and PBNEC is remarkably higher in our study&#46; These ratios were found as 4&#46;1&#37; for ABC and 2&#46;4&#37; for PBNEC&#46;</p><p id="par0125" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Apocrine type breast cancer should be distinguished from IDC because it might not respond to classic hormone agents due to different hormone receptor profiles and aggressive clinical behaviors&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0210"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">14</span></a> However&#44; the similarities in clinical and prognostic characteristics of ABC and IDC may cause diagnostic difficulties&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0215"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">15</span></a> In our study&#44; primary tumoral <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG uptakes of patients with ABC and IDC were similar&#46; It is well known that ER and PR expressions in breast carcinoma is associated with good prognosis&#44; negative ER&#44; PR and positive HER2 expressions are associated with poor prognosis&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0220"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">16</span></a> The characteristic hormone profile &#40;ER&#8722;&#44; PR&#8722;&#44; and AR&#43; of the ABC subtype has a prominent role in distinguishing from IDC&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0150"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">2</span></a> ER positivity in ABC was documented in the literature as 3&#46;8&#8211;60&#37;&#44; PR positivity as 4&#46;8&#8211;40&#37;&#44; and HER2 positivity as 50&#37;&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0225"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">17</span></a> Zhang et al&#46; compared clinicopathological features of 260&#46;596 cases consisting of 840 ABC &#40;0&#46;32&#37;&#41; and 259&#46;756 IDC &#40;99&#46;68&#37;&#41; patients&#46; The researchers provided the patients&#8217; data from the Surveillance&#44; Epidemiology and End Result &#40;SEER&#41; database in 2017&#46; It was reported that 29&#46;9&#37; of ABC lesions and 77&#46;2&#37; of IDC lesions were identified as ER positive&#59; 23&#46;2&#37; of ABC lesions and 67&#46;1&#37; of IDC lesions were identified as PR positive&#46; Statistically significant differences were observed between ABC and IDC groups according to the ER and PR expressions &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#60;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0&#46;001&#41;&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0230"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span></a> In accordance with this data&#44; the positive PR and ER receptor ratios found in our study were statistically lower in the ABC group than the IDC group&#46; However&#44; HER2 receptor status was significantly higher in the ABC group compared to IDC group in our study results&#46;</p><p id="par0130" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">PBNEC most frequently occurs in older women&#46; Yang et al&#46; reported a mean age of 59&#46;2 years in PBNEC patients&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0155"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">3</span></a> Similarly in our study&#44; the mean age of patients with PBNEC was 67&#46;9 years&#44; which is higher than the mean ages of both ABC and IDC patients &#40;55&#46;5 and 54&#46;0 years&#44; respectively&#41;&#46;</p><p id="par0135" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The disadvantages of poorly differentiated PBNECs in <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG PET&#47;CT imaging were highlighted in some of studies&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0235"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">19</span></a> The sensitivity of <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG PET&#47;CT depends on lesion size&#44; metabolic activity&#44; the surrounding tissue&#44; and the serum glucose level&#46; False-negative results can occur in small-sized lesions or those with low metabolic activity&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0240"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">20</span></a> Kamaleshwaran et al&#46; detected an intense <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG uptake in the inner quadrant of the left breast and showed a metastasis in the T4 vertebra of a 45-year-old female patient by whole-body PET&#47;CT scan&#44; and researchers noted that <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG PET&#47;CT imaging is beneficial to detect primary NEC and bone metastasis&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0245"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">21</span></a> In our study&#44; although <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG uptake in patients with the PBNEC was found to be lower compared to ABC and IDC patients&#44; differences among groups were not statistically significant&#46;</p><p id="par0140" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Axillary lymph node involvement in breast cancer has been documented as the most important prognostic factor affecting survival in numerous studies&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0250"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">22</span></a> Although the prevalence of ALN involvement was reported between 1&#37; and 4&#37; in ABC&#44; Dreyer et al&#46; Reported positive ALN involvement in 6 of 14 triple negative ABC patients&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0225"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">17&#44;23</span></a> In a study Olewniczak et al&#46; Detected ALN involvement in 128 &#40;50&#46;9&#37;&#41; of 251 IDC patients&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0260"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">24</span></a> In our study&#44; ALN involvement was observed in 91&#46;7&#37; of ABC patients and this ratio was significantly higher than IDC and PBNEC patients by PET&#47;CT &#40;68&#46;2&#37; and 71&#46;4&#37;&#44; respectively&#41;&#46;</p><p id="par0145" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">In a meta-analysis consisting of 58 articles and 108 patients diagnosed with PBNEC&#44; the mean tumor diameter was 3&#46;7<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>cm&#44; ALN involvement was 51&#37;&#44; and distant metastases was 9&#37;&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0265"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">25</span></a> In addition&#44; Roininen et al&#46; reported mean primary tumor size of 2&#46;2<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>cm&#44; ALN involvement of 39&#46;6&#37;&#44; and distant metastases 9&#46;3&#37; in their study&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0150"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">2</span></a> In our study&#44; the mean diameter of primary tumors was 3<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>cm&#44; ALN involvement and distant metastases rates were found 28&#46;6&#37; and 21&#46;4&#37;&#44; respectively&#46; In contrast to literature in our PBNEC group&#44; a high rate distant metastases was observed&#44; although a lower rate ALN involvement was detected&#46;</p><p id="par0150" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The high <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG uptake ratio in patients with the TN subtype breast cancer has been highlighted in published data&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0250"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">22</span></a> In a study conducted by Keam et al&#46; in 78 cases&#44; significantly increased SUVmax were documented in the TN group &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0&#46;008&#41;&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0270"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">26</span></a> The TN subtype is an heterogeneous group morphologically and in terms of treatment response&#46; The researchers underlined the aggressive clinical behavior and poor prognosis of the TN subtype in the IDC&#44; but the rarity of ABC prevalence with the TN subtype considerably limits the available knowledge in literature&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0210"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">14</span></a> Choi et al&#46; detected that 9&#46;8&#37; &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>12&#41; of the patients had the ABC subtype in 122 patients with the TN subtype&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0275"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">27</span></a> Tsutsumi has detected TN subtype in 48&#37; &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>21&#47;44&#41; of ABCs among 429 cases&#46; In the same study&#44; the TN subtype in the IDC subtype was reported as 7&#46;07&#37; &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>23&#47;325&#41;&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0280"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">28</span></a> However&#44; Guo et al&#46; detected 48&#46;9&#37; &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>44&#47;90&#41; of HER2 negative in ABCs with ER and PR negative subtypes&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0220"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">16</span></a> In our study&#44; the TN and HER2 subtype rates in the ABC group were found 25&#37; and 16&#46;7&#37;&#44; and in IDC group these ratios were found 10&#46;8&#37; and 6&#46;9&#37;&#44; respectively&#46;</p><p id="par0155" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleItalic">In conclusion</span>&#44; there are no studies evaluating the clinical characteristics of subtypes of ABC with <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG PET&#47;CT&#44; and the SUVmax of the TN ABC subtype was compared with both non-TN ABC and TN IDC patients for the first time in our study&#46; The highest <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG uptakes were detected in the TN subtype IDC and in the HER2 subtype ABC patients&#46; Further analysis with <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG PET&#47;CT in TN and HER2 subtypes in the ABC and IDC subtypes may contribute to better understanding of tumor behaviors and management of ABC patients particularly with TN subtype&#46; On the other hand&#44; metabolic characteristics of PBNEC were analyzed in detail by <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG PET&#47;CT for the first time in this study&#46; Although <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG uptake in the Luminal B subtype of PBNEC was higher than Luminal A subtype&#44;         "resumen" => "<span id="abst0025" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0035">Objetivo</span><p id="spar0025" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">El objetivo fue evaluar el impacto diagn&#243;stico y la estadificaci&#243;n mediante PET&#47;TC con <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG en carcinomas apocrinos &#40;ABC&#41; y carcinomas neuroendocrinos &#40;PBNEC&#41; y detectar posibles alteraciones en la captaci&#243;n de <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG seg&#250;n el subtipo histol&#243;gico de estos tumores&#46; Adem&#225;s&#44; nuestro objetivo fue comparar los hallazgos de la PET&#47;TC con <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG entre ABC&#44; PBNEC y el carcinoma ductal invasivo &#40;IDC&#41; de mama&#46;</p></span> <span id="abst0030" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0040">M&#233;todos</span><p id="spar0030" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">Se incluyeron restrospectivamente un total de 570 pacientes y 585 lesiones mamarias&#46; Despu&#233;s de clasificar a los pacientes en subtipos moleculares de acuerdo con el an&#225;lisis histopatol&#243;gico&#44; se realizaron im&#225;genes de PET&#47;TC con <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG y se compararon los hallazgos del an&#225;lisis visual y SUVmax de los tumores primarios entre los distintos grupos&#46;</p></span> <span id="abst0035" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0045">Resultados</span><p id="spar0035" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">El IDC fue el carcinoma de mayor prevalencia&#44; con una tasa de detecci&#243;n del 77&#46;7&#37; &#40;n&#61; 446&#41; en nuestro estudio&#46; Sin embargo&#44; se diagnosticaron 4&#46;1&#37; &#40;n&#61; 24&#41; ABC y 2&#46;4&#37; &#40;n&#61; 14&#41; PBNEC&#46; El SUVm&#225;x medio m&#225;s alto se registr&#243; en el subtipo HER2 del ABC y se encontr&#243; una diferencia estad&#237;sticamente significativa entre la ratio de captaci&#243;n de <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG de los subtipos HER2 y TN comparados con el tipo luminal B del ABC &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span>&#61; 0&#46;038&#44; <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span>&#61; 0&#46;019&#44; respectivamente&#41;&#46; Aunque la captaci&#243;n de <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG en el subtipo Luminal B de PBNEC fue mayor que el subtipo Luminal A&#44; la diferencia no fue estad&#237;sticamente significativa&#46;Adem&#225;s&#44; la tasa de met&#225;stasis axilar fue significativamente mayor en el grupo ABC que en los otros grupos &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span>&#61; 0&#46;015&#41;&#46;</p></span> <span id="abst0040" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0050">Conclusiones</span><p id="spar0040" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">Los subtipos histopatol&#243;gicos del grupo ABC mostraron diferentes grados de captaci&#243;n de <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG con respecto a los subtipos del grupo IDC&#44; a pesar de que en general la captaci&#243;n de <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG fue menor en el grupo de PBNEC&#46; La PET&#47;TC demostr&#243; ser adecuada en la detecci&#243;n de tumores primarios y met&#225;stasis en nuestro estudio&#46; Los resultados de la exploraci&#243;n PET&#47;TC con <span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span>F-FDG pueden contribuir a la estadificaci&#243;n inicial y al manejo de pacientes con ABC y PBNEC&#46;</p></span>"
