Resumo
Objectivos

Abstract
Aims

to assess the effect of 10% carbamide peroxide and 25% hydrogen peroxide activated by an LED lamp, on the morphology of the enamel surface and to compare the effect of the two treatments.

Materials and Methods

thirty samples were obtained after the separation of the crowns of fifteen premolars, split vertically on the long dental axis and from the vestibular to the lingual faces. Three groups were established according to the treatment: a control group (no treatment); Group II, 10% carbamide peroxide (Platinum®, 14 days); Group III, 25% hydrogen peroxide (Zoom! Chairside System, 60 minutes). Between treatments the samples were immersed in artificial saliva. 24 hours after the end of the treatment, the samples were prepared in order to be observed with a Scanning Electron Microscope.

Results

Observation with scanning electron microscope of the samples subjected to whitening treatment, when compared to those of the control group, revealed an erosive aspect and pronounced cracks in all samples of groups II and III. This aspect is present in all samples of groups II and III 24 hours after finishing treatment, but is more evident in group III.

Conclusions

1 – Morphological alterations of the enamel surface occur in all samples subjected to both whitening techniques in the first 24 hours after finishing the treatment, but the Zoom! Chairside System® seems to cause more pronounced alterations on the surface. 2 – More observations need to be carried out with a greater time lapse to allow a conclusion on the regression of the morphological alterations.
