Resumo

A hipersensibilidade dentinária (HD) é uma condição relativamente comum na prática clínica da Medicina Dentária. Este problema poderá incomodar o doente durante vários atos rotineiros como sejam: durante a escovagem, ao ingerir alimentos ou bebidas e por vezes até ao respirar. A terapêutica interventiva com agentes dessensibilizantes atualmente disponíveis, apenas providencia alívio parcial da dor referida pelo doente, sendo a sua recorrência um evento frequente. Muito permanece ainda por esclarecer sobre a HD, sendo a sua própria designação ainda questionada por alguns. Por outro lado, existem numerosos estudos clínicos sobre ainda mais numerosos métodos de tratamento, todos alegando a sua eficácia e superioridade, havendo autores que afirmam que não existe outra doença conhecida pelo Homem que tenha tido tantos tratamentos diferentes todos com sucesso. Este artigo irá debruçar-se sobre a etiologia, epidemiologia, protocolo clínico e métodos de tratamento profissionais disponíveis da HD, sendo certo que não existe nenhum protocolo universalmente aceite para o correto tratamento desta.

Abstract

Dentin hypersensitivity is a relatively common condition in dentistry's clinical practice. This condition can disturb the patient during numerous daily tasks, such as brushing his teeth, eating, drinking and sometimes even breathing. Interceptive therapy with desensitizing agents currently available only relieves part of the pain felt by the patient, being its recurrence a frequent finding. Much remains to be determined about dentin hypersensitivity, being its own designation still questioned by some. On the other hand, there are numerous studies over even more numerous treatment methods, all of them claiming their success and superiority, up to an extent that some authors claim that there is no other disease known to Man that had so many treatment regimens, all carried out with success. This paper will discuss the etiology, epidemiology, clinical protocol and professional treatment methods available for dentin hypersensitivity, being a fact that there is no universally accepted protocol when it comes to treating dentin hypersensitivity.
