Abstract

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a study's subject in odontoestomatology. It's a not much studied joint in rheumatology. We present a basic review of anatomic aspects, primary or secondary rheumatic diseases finded in this joint. The primary degenerative joint disease or derived pathology from internal derangement is the most frequent problem. Developed techniques as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for TMJ study has contributed to the best structural knowledge, completing more information than in simple X-ray. Oral drugs, local anaesthesic infiltration and external supporting mesures are the basis of an effective treatment, moreover in some cases is surgery that solves the problem.
