imperativo de la seguridad sanitaria" ] ] "textoCompleto" => "<span class="elsevierStyleSections"><span id="s0005" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="st0065">Introduction</span><p id="p0005" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Providing adequate and timely healthcare services to patients is imperative in the healthcare system. It depends on the organization, functioning, and coordination of activities performed by various healthcare workers (HCWs). Laboratory personnel (LPs) play a crucial role in patient management because approximately 70% of treatment decisions are based on their findings.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0005"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1</span></a> Although their contribution has never been highlighted or recognized in the public eye, the current Covid 19 pandemic has brought this profession and the importance of modern laboratory medicine to the spotlight.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0010"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">2</span></a><span class="elsevierStyleSup">,</span><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0015"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">3</span></a> It has never been more important for every country to have well-trained, qualified, and experienced LPs capable of performing trillion Covid 19 tests in addition to normal testing.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0020"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">4</span></a> While the invisible heroes finally got their five minutes of fame, the health consequences of working overtime with inadequate protective equipment during extremely difficult pandemic times remain an unanswered question.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0025"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">5</span></a> Moreover, the current coronavirus pandemic has managed to displace concerns about the potential occupational hazards that inevitably arise when analyzing biological specimens, whether the work is done manually or with modern technology and sophisticated instrumentation. Confronting new pandemic challenges has highlighted the importance and role of immunization in combating vaccine-preventable occupational diseases as well as the many challenges in achieving this goal.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0030"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">6</span></a><span class="elsevierStyleSup">,</span><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0035"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">7</span></a></p><p id="p0010" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">In the last decade, Europe has faced several epidemics of infectious diseases that have had a major impact on the expansion of vaccination programs. Hepatitis B and seasonal influenza vaccinations have been implemented in 35 countries. Recommendations for vaccination against measles, hepatitis B, and tuberculosis exist in 29, 17, and seven countries, respectively. Immunization is mandatory in 13 countries; in some countries, it is a requirement for employment in the healthcare system.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0040"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">8</span></a><span class="elsevierStyleSup">,</span><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0045"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">9</span></a> Healthcare workers' vaccination coverage varies greatly according to geographical region, and they are usually below the projected coverage, despite the current guidelines. The majority of reports focus on specific territories, levels of healthcare, or the largest groups of healthcare workers, namely, nurses and doctors. In European countries, Belgium (94.8%) and Croatia (94%) had the highest vaccination coverage against hepatitis B among high-risk groups of HCWs, whereas Serbia (SRB) had vaccination coverage of 50.2%.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bb0050"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">10–12</span></a> Seasonal influenza vaccination coverage oscillated more, ranging from 7.5% in France to 63% in the Netherlands.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0065"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">13</span></a><span class="elsevierStyleSup">,</span><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0070"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">14</span></a> HCWs in Italy are immunized against measles and tuberculosis in 20–30%.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0075"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">15</span></a> In France, 64% and 33% of HCWs are immunized against measles, respectively.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0080"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">16</span></a> Strengthening prevention programs for this population requires the consideration of several factors. The basis lies in the alignment of national policies for the vaccination of HCWs in Europe, which varies widely, notably when neighboring countries are considered.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0040"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">8</span></a> Good examples are the different regulations in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIH) and SRB. Hepatitis B and influenza vaccinations are strongly recommended for HCWs, but measles and tuberculosis vaccinations are compulsory for children in the BIH.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0085"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">17</span></a> In contrast, vaccination of health workers is mandatory in SRB and widely implemented.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0090"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span></a> The second factor is the inadequate distribution, equity, and availability of vaccines in developing countries, which mainly reflects the economic strength of the country.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0040"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">8</span></a><span class="elsevierStyleSup">,</span><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0095"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">19</span></a><span class="elsevierStyleSup">,</span><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0100"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">20</span></a> One of the most important factors is the level of awareness among HCWs regarding the importance and role of vaccination. For example, the current Covid 19 pandemic has taught us that targeted publicity campaigns are needed to reduce vaccination hesitancy.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0105"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">21</span></a> Unfortunately, HCWs whose main role is to promote vaccination cannot be excluded. Acknowledging the lack of studies directed toward a population of laboratory professionals, this study aimed to assess the differences in vaccination coverage among LPs employed in healthcare facilities, focusing on influenza, hepatitis B, measles, and tuberculosis.</p></span><span id="s0010" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="st0070">Materials and methods</span><p id="p0015" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Health Studies, University of Sarajevo approved this multicenter, cross-sectional, quantitative study (number 04–7-94/19). Data collection was conducted online between November 2019 and February 2020, during wider research addressing occupational exposure of European LPs and risk assessment in biomedical laboratories.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0110"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">22</span></a> As a tool, we used the previously developed bilingual and anonymous questionnaire.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0115"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">23</span></a> The questionnaire was pre-tested and validated by ten experts in terms of the reliability and validity of the instrument. Cronbach's alpha and Content Validity Index were 0.742 and 0.97, respectively. Although the questionnaire had 150 questions, in the present study, we used some variables focused on the demographic characteristics and vaccination status of LPs.</p><p id="p0020" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">All LPs who met the inclusion criteria were included in this study. The defined criteria were as follows: active employment relationship in biomedical laboratories of the private or public sector in European countries regardless of educational level and voluntarily filled out and returned the completed form, which was considered consent for participation in research and data use. LPs without an active employment relationship in a biomedical laboratory in the study area were excluded. The respondents were divided into two groups based on their territorial affiliations. Group I represented LPs from non-EU countries, and group II represented respondents from EU countries.</p><p id="p0025" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The snowball sampling method was used, and the initials were distributed through the European Association for Professions in Biomedical Science, the Chamber of Graduate Medical Health Engineers in FBiH, and the Association of Laboratory and Sanitary Health Professionals in BIH networks. All professional associations involved in this study consented to the distribution of the questionnaire. To avoid duplicate submissions, Google Forms settings were created to allow only one response per email address. In addition, responses to all questions were mandatory; therefore, all returned surveys were included in further analysis. The study procedure and data collection were conducted in accordance with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki.</p><p id="p0030" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">All data were coded and subjected to statistical analysis. The variables of interest included demographic characteristics, work environment, influenza vaccination status (one dose annually), hepatitis B (3-dose schedule), measles (2-dose schedule), and tuberculosis (2-dose schedule). Quantitative variables (age) were reported as median and range, whereas categorical variables (sex, education level, laboratory type, sector, vaccination status, age group ≤<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>45 years, and > 45 years) were reported as frequencies and percentages. Our age cutoff was derived from the mean age of all LPs in our study, which was 44 years, rounded up to the nearest 5 years, giving us 45 years. Univariate analysis with a chi-square test was performed to assess the association between vaccination status and the other variables of interest. The determinants of vaccination rates were also examined by multivariate logistic regression using IBM SPSS Statistics 25.00 (IBM Corporation, Armonk, New York, USA). Results were expressed as odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals, and a p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.</p></span><span id="s0015" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="st0075">Results</span><p id="p0035" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The respondents' demographic characteristics are presented in <a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#t0005">Table 1</a>. In total, 640 LPs from 20 countries participated in this study. The respondents in Group I (n = 459) consisted of LPs from BiH, SRB, North Macedonia, and Montenegro and 181 respondents from 16 countries (Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Finland, Greece, Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Croatia, Slovenia, and Sweden) were in Group II. The majority (78.4%) of respondents in the total sample and study groups were female (78.4%), and approximately two-thirds of the LPs were under 45 years of age (70.5%). Statistically significant differences in sex (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> < 0.001) and age structure (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.005) between the examined groups were established. The average age of the respondents was 44 years (range 20–63). More than half (59.4%) of the LPs in the total sample had a university degree, while significant differences were found in the level of education between the groups (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> < 0.001). Overall, 44.1% of the respondents were employed in biochemistry laboratories, while the lowest representation was found in histopathological laboratories (8.7%). In the non-EU group, approximately half of the respondents (53.4%) were employed in biochemical laboratories, and approximately one-third (29.3%) of the respondents in the EU were employed in microbiological laboratories (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> < 0.001). The average length of work experience was 14.3 years (range 4–28) and most respondents (83.7%) worked in the public sector (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.117).</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="t0005"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="p0040" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Of the 640 respondents, one-third (30.9%) received an available influenza vaccine each year, while 69.1% reported not having been vaccinated. Significantly higher vaccination coverage rates have been reported for measles, tuberculosis, and hepatitis B (82.8%, 78.3%, and 72.5%, respectively). Using univariate analysis, we determined the differences in vaccination coverage rates between the groups by demographic characteristics (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#t0010">Table 2</a>). Influenza vaccination coverage was higher among LPs with higher education (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> < 0.001), microbiology laboratories (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.009), in the private sector (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.012), and twice as high among citizens in EU countries (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> < 0.001). Measles vaccination coverage was significantly lower among individuals over 45 years of age (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> < 0.001), LPs with college degrees (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.015), and EU citizens (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.002). Tuberculosis vaccination coverage varied by group, except for sex and territorial affiliation. Those who were 45 years and older (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> < 0.001), had higher educational attainment (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.003), were employed in microbiology laboratories (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.004), and in the private sector (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.025) had better vaccination coverage. Hepatitis B vaccination coverage was higher among LPs under 45 years of age (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.020) and among respondents with higher levels of education (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> = 0.003). Regarding territorial affiliation (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> < 0.001), 90.1% of LPs from the EU received all doses of hepatitis B vaccine, compared with 65.6% of LPs from non-EU countries.</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="t0010"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="p0045" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Odds ratios were calculated based on variables that were significantly different in the univariate analysis (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#t0015">Table 3</a>). Significant risk factors for failure to receive annual influenza vaccination were public sector (OR 1.73, 95% CI:1.12–2.67) and non-EU citizens (OR 5.24, 95% CI:3.61–7.61). A similar pattern was found for hepatitis B vaccination (OR 1.54, 95% CI:1.07–2.22 and OR 4.89, 95% CI:2.91–8.26, respectively). Age and educational level were identified as risk factors for nonvaccination against measles and tuberculosis. For LPs older than 45 years, OR and 95% CI were 3.24 (2.13–4.98) for inadequate measles vaccination and 2.02 (1.37–2.99) for tuberculosis. OR and 95% CI were lower for those with high education levels, 2.06 (1.01–4.23) and 2.43 (1.19–4.97), respectively.</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="t0015"></elsevierMultimedia></span><span id="s0020" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="st0080">Limitations of the study</span><p id="p0050" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Although this research fills important gaps in the literature, it is not without limitations. First, vaccination status was self-reported and not verified by vaccination records. In addition, this study was cross-sectional, which implies that the findings are limited. The limitations of the questionnaire include its design, language, lengthy questions, response bias, and potential recall bias among respondents. With a shortened and adapted questionnaire, future research could address these limitations by inviting a larger population to participate.</p></span><span id="s0025" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="st0085">Discussion</span><p id="p0055" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The present study showed that the vaccination coverage rate in the study area was satisfactory for most LPs against hepatitis B, tuberculosis, and measles, while the coverage rate against influenza was low. Our results on hepatitis B vaccination coverage in the total sample (72.5%) are consistent with those of several studies conducted in different regions in Italy (65–92%), Germany (69.5%), BiH (75%), Northern Cyprus (77.1%), and Sweden (79%).<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0030"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">6</span></a><span class="elsevierStyleSup">,</span><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bb0120"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">24–27</span></a> Better coverage in Europe was found by Vranckx et al.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0050"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">10</span></a> in a study conducted in Belgium (84.9%). In a Croatian study, Cviljak et al.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0055"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">11</span></a> pointed out differences in vaccination coverage according to the profession and work environment. The vaccination coverage rate was 94% in the LP group. Our results for the overall sample differ from those of studies in Greece (60.3% and 56.5%) and SRB (66.2%) which have strict legislation for mandatory vaccination of HCWs but are consistent with our results for non-EU countries.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0040"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">8</span></a><span class="elsevierStyleSup">,</span><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0140"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">28</span></a><span class="elsevierStyleSup">,</span><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0145"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">29</span></a> Despite the differences in hepatitis B vaccination coverage rates among EU countries, we believe it is important to compare our results with those of countries at different levels of development. Research has shown that the vaccination coverage rate in the United States is 80.7%, whereas it is much lower in developing countries. It ranges from 43.5% in India to 40% in Pakistan, 33.6% in Tanzania, 16% in Egypt, 13% in Kenya, 12% in Georgia, and 5% in Uganda.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bb0150"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">30–35</span></a> The indication that 62.4% of HCWs in Ethiopia are willing to pay for a hepatitis B vaccine suggests that the unequal availability of free vaccines significantly increases occupational risk.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0180"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">36</span></a> The CDC estimates that the risk of infection for unvaccinated HCWs after a needle stick or cut from contact with HBV-infected blood is between 6% and 30%.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0185"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">37</span></a> In addition to vaccine availability, satisfactory hepatitis B vaccine coverage among LPs is due to widespread childhood vaccination. The upward trend in vaccination coverage in Europe must be maintained because of the substantial influx of migrants from areas of high hepatitis B endemicity as well as population fluctuations in the same area.</p><p id="p0060" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Our results indicate low influenza vaccination coverage. In total. 30.9% of the sample reported having been vaccinated against influenza every year, with statistically significant differences between the EU and non-EU countries (57.5% vs. 20.5%). These indicators of vaccination coverage differ significantly from the projections in EU countries, which are 75% in England, 75–95% in Italy, 80% in Belgium, and 95% in France,<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0190"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">38</span></a> and from the guidelines of the European Directive 2000/54/ EC on the protection of workers from risks related to exposure to biological agents.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0195"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">39</span></a> According to a survey by Aguilar-Díaz,<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0065"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">13</span></a> vaccination coverage among HCWs ranges from 7.5% in France to 63% in the Netherlands. The survey also included health workers' intention to be vaccinated, ranging from 13.3% in China to 89% in Kenya. Obvious barriers to influenza vaccination include doubts about the safety and efficacy of vaccines, fear of side effects, and not being considered at risk of infection.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0065"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">13</span></a><span class="elsevierStyleSup">,</span><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bb0200"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">40–43</span></a> Our findings are consistent with those of the study by Assaf et al.,<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0200"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">40</span></a> which found that 33.5% of HCWs were vaccinated against seasonal influenza. A study conducted in Saudi Arabia reported an increase in the number of HCWs vaccinated after the H1N1 pandemic from 20.7% to 44.1% in 2015, noting that the main motivation for vaccination was personal protection and the protection of family members.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0205"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">41</span></a> In the context of the current Covid 19 pandemic, Papagiannis et al.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0220"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">44</span></a> investigated the vaccination preparedness of HCWs before the official launch of the Greek authorities' campaign on the importance of vaccination and found that seasonal influenza vaccination coverage was unexpectedly high (74%). According to the results of a survey conducted in the same region among 2246 HCWs, the vaccination coverage rate was 36.1% a year earlier.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0140"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">28</span></a> Influenza vaccination has been shown to have positive effects on protecting the health of workers and patients and reducing absenteeism and nosocomial infections.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0035"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">7</span></a><span class="elsevierStyleSup">,</span><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0200"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">40</span></a></p><p id="p0065" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">In our study, optimal coverage rates were found for measles and tuberculosis (82.8% and 78.3%, respectively), which could be due to the inclusion of these vaccinations in national immunization programs or the fact that vaccination is recommended at an increased risk in childhood.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0225"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">45</span></a> The coverage rate of the MMR vaccine, which also protects against measles, is 96.8% among HCWs in Italy,<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0230"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">46</span></a> but the authors emphasize that serological testing to detect protective antibodies is not performed in most Italian hospitals.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0120"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">24</span></a> Studies from Greece (18.8% and 43.3%, respectively) and France (49.7%) also reported lower measles vaccination coverage rates<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0040"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">8</span></a><span class="elsevierStyleSup">,</span><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0140"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">28</span></a><span class="elsevierStyleSup">,</span><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0235"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">47</span></a> than our results. The wide variation in vaccination coverage rates in the study population suggests that HCWs are not a positive example of ensuring herd immunity, which requires up to 95% coverage. Together with the low vaccination coverage in the general population, this likely contributed to the occurrence of new epidemics in Europe.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0240"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">48</span></a> BCG vaccine coverage in LPs is lower than that in the general population, which ranges from 90% in Austria to 99% in countries with different levels of development (Hungary, Albania, Japan, China, Iran, and Morocco). Among the set of non-EU countries included in the study, the 2019 vaccination coverage rates were 98%, 95%, 93%, and 80% in SRB, BiH, Northern Macedonia, and Montenegro, respectively.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0245"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">49</span></a> Our results for the study population differed from those of Vaquero et al.,<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0250"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">50</span></a> who found that 38% of LPs received BCG vaccination during their lifetime.</p><p id="p0070" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">In our study, age > 45 years and higher education were determined to be determinants of vaccine non-uptake against tuberculosis, hepatitis B, and measles. Similar results were reported in a study conducted in Greece, and we support the authors' view that these were probably HCWs who missed childhood vaccinations.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0140"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">28</span></a> Our results on the association of lower education levels are consistent with those of a study by Byrd et al. conducted in the United States.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0150"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">30</span></a> A similar study focusing on seasonal influenza vaccination was conducted in Saudi Arabia, where higher education (odds ratio [OR] 2.42) and age > 40 years (OR 2.69) were found to be significant determinants of non-uptake.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0255"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">51</span></a> Our results are in agreement with those of a study by Squeri et al. conducted in Italy, in which age (<<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>40 years) was associated with a different response to the non-uptake of certain vaccines among HCWs.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0075"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">15</span></a> Although we did not compare vaccination coverage between different profiles of HCWs in our study, Aaron et al. reported concerning data on vaccination coverage. Using multivariate analysis, the authors found that laboratory technicians and medical attendants were six and seven times more likely than intern doctors to be unvaccinated/incompletely vaccinated.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0165"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">33</span></a> However, we consider that the identification of geographic area, education level, and age provides a basis for conducting additional research to identify the reasons for the non-vaccination of HCWs. We share opinions with the authors'statements<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0070"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">14</span></a><span class="elsevierStyleSup">,</span><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bb0260"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">52</span></a> that LPs do not have a sufficiently developed awareness of the importance of immunization and its role in reducing occupational diseases, considering the frequency of exposure and the level of risk in this activity. However, the provided data, although based on the self-report of LPs on vaccination coverage, can be considered significant for health institutions as well as umbrella bodies as a basis for creating targeted campaigns focused on education and the promotion of vaccination.</p></span><span id="s0030" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="st0090">Conclusion</span><p id="p0075" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Although LPs vaccination coverage against hepatitis B, tuberculosis, and measles can generally be considered satisfactory compared to influenza, significant differences were found between the EU and non-EU countries. The above risk factors, together with public sector employment and lower levels of education, provide the basis for targeted promotional campaigns aimed at raising awareness of the importance and role of vaccination. These findings underscore the need for national umbrella organizations to work together to harmonize vaccination guidelines for this group of health professionals. It is important to emphasize that it is necessary to conduct research in this population, considering its small number and the importance of its role in the treatment of patients.
