RESUMEN
Fundamentos

ABSTRACT
Backgrounds

An estimate of the burden of serious hepatitis A infections can be obtained from information on hospitalizations. Data were obtained from the national surveillance system for hospital data (the Minimum Basic Data Set) in Spain. All hospital discharges for hepatitis A were analyzed for the 1995-98 period.

Method

A total of 1 148 admissions for hepatitis A were identified, representing an annual incidence of 8.7 per 1 000 000 inhabitants. Thirty percent of cases were < 10 years of age and 64% were 11-40 years old. Each year hepatitis A was responsible for an average of 1894 days of hospitalization, representing an annual cost of N 389 602.

Conclusion

Although the overall burden of hepatitis A infections requiring hospitalization is modest, it could probably be greatly reduced by achieving a high level of immunity among the population through routine vaccination of young children.
