No olvidemos la historia" ] ] "textoCompleto" => "<span class="elsevierStyleSections"><p id="p0005" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">On 14 May 1796, in Berkeley, England, Edward Jenner inoculated part of the content of a pustule (lymph) of cowpox (variolae vaccinae) found on the hand of a milkmaid, Sarah Nelmes, into the arm of James Phipps, the 8-year-old son of her gardener, by making 2 small incisions. Thus, the first vaccine was born, and Jenner is regarded as the “father of vaccines”.</p><p id="p0010" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Louis Pasteur, on 6 July 1885, made the extraordinary discovery of a vaccine for rabies (made from attenuated virus, previously tested in animals) that he administered to a 9-year-old child, Joseph Meister, who had been bitten 14 times by a rabid dog, and was able to save his life. From that time forward, Pasteur used the terms “vaccine” and “vaccination” (at the time known as <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">vaccina</span> and <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">vaccination</span>), that derive from the Latin <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">vaccinus</span> (from the word for cow)<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">,</span> in tribute to Jenner.</p><p id="p0015" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">With respect to these “new” terms, it is worth noting that “vaccine” was chosen as the <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">word of the year</span> by the Fundéu RAE [term referring to the Emergency Spanish Foundation of the Royal Spanish Academy of Language (Fundación del Español Urgente de la Real Academia Española de la Lengua)], inasmuch as it was one of the concepts that was heard most in the media since the end of 2020, when the first vaccines for SARS-CoV-2 were approved and administered during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time (December 2021), the word “vaccinology” was accepted by the RAE, after intense management by the Asociación Española de Vacunología (Spanish Association of Vaccinology), defining it as the “the branch of therapeutics that deals with the study of vaccines”.</p><p id="p0020" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">October 2023 witnessed the beginning of the systematic, funded administration of a monoclonal antibody in Spain to prevent infection by the syncytial respiratory virus in newborns and infants up to the age of 6 months. While vaccines create active, long-standing immunity against a disease by stimulating the immune system, monoclonal antibodies produce passive immunity that is immediate and temporary, by direct application of antibodies. Accordingly, the vaccination schedule should be renamed the immunization schedule, in keeping with terminological rigour. Vaccines are a form of active immunization, while monocolonal antibodies are not a vaccines, but rather a form of passive immunization.</p><p id="p0025" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Some schedules have already adopted this new name. We believe that we must be true to history and speak of vaccinations, with the precision of medical language, as immunizations. Our proposal is that the schedule be names “vaccination and immunization”.</p><p id="p0030" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">We should be both faithful and grateful to Jenner and Pasteur.
