La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) estima que entre un total de 1.500 y 1.740 millones de personas en el mundo padecen anemia ferropénica, lo que supone el 24,8% de la población<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0030"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1</span></a>.</p><p id="par0010" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Las pérdidas menstruales hacen de las mujeres en edad fértil uno de los principales grupos de riesgo de padecer anemia ferropénica<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0035"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">2</span></a>.</p><p id="par0015" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">El objetivo de nuestro trabajo fue estudiar la prevalencia de anemia ferropénica entre las mujeres de 18 a 35 años que fueron atendidas en los centros de salud de la Dirección Asistencial Centro en Madrid, durante los años 2010 a 2015. Se accedió a consult@web, herramienta del Servicio Madrileño de Salud que permite acceder a datos basados en las historias clínicas de los 49 centros de salud adscritos a dicha Dirección Asistencial. Se buscó el número de pacientes de sexo femenino, de 18 a 35 años que durante los años 2010 a 2015 estaban diagnosticadas de anemia ferropénica (código B80 de la Clasificación Internacional de Atención Primaria CIAP-2), y se recogieron también los códigos CIAP-2 de otros procesos que podrían relacionarse con el diagnóstico de anemia ferropénica, con independencia de la menstruación. El estudio fue aprobado por la Comisión Local de Investigación de la Dirección Asistencial Centro del Servicio Madrileño de Salud.</p><p id="par0020" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">El número de mujeres de 18 a 35 años adscritas a la Dirección Asistencial Centro durante los años 2010 a 2015 era de 189.495. De las 161.315 mujeres que fueron atendidas en sus respectivos centros de salud, 6.321 (3,92%) fueron diagnosticadas de anemia ferropénica. En la <a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0005">tabla 1</a> se presenta su distribución en función de si presentaban algún episodio de anemia ferropénica o de anemia ferropénica en combinación con otros procesos relacionados. Llama la atención que el embarazo es la principal causa asociada a la anemia (n<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>=<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>837; 0,52% de las mujeres atendidas). Es importante destacar que, de todas las mujeres que presentaban anemia ferropénica, el mayor porcentaje (61,8%) es el de las que no tenían su anemia asociada a otras causas y se puede afirmar que se debía únicamente a las pérdidas menstruales.</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0005"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="par0025" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Como principal punto fuerte de este trabajo podríamos destacar el gran volumen de población diana estudiada. Supone prácticamente la cuarta parte (23,4%) de la población femenina entre 18 y 45 años de la Comunidad de Madrid (y el 47% de la capital). Al no haber trabajado con una muestra, considerando todo el universo de estudio, se minimiza el error aleatorio y se mejora la validez externa de los resultados.</p><p id="par0030" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Nuestros resultados muestran que existe un porcentaje importante, que no puede excluirse, de mujeres premenopáusicas con anemia ferropénica. Teniendo en cuenta que la deficiencia de hierro tiene consecuencias muy adversas para la salud<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0040"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">3-5</span></a>, es necesario que los médicos de atención primaria estén muy atentos a la posible presencia de esta patología. En el caso de las mujeres premenopáusicas se debe en la mayoría de los casos a la presencia de la menstruación sin otras causas.
