Introduction. We proposed to study the influence of truncal vagotomy performed in rats on the regulation of food intake in terms of the total amount ingested every 24 hours and the biological rhythm of ingestion as governed by the light-dark cycle of these animals. Material and method. We designed an information system connected to the rat cages that enabled us to measure the exact amount of food ingested by the animals over a preset length of time. Forty-eight Wistar rats were used as a control group in which we determined their feeding habits under the conditions of temperature and humidity existing in our laboratory. They were divided into two groups of the same size: group I underwent sham laparotomy and group II was subjected to truncal vagotomy and pyloroplasty. Results. The animals in the control group presented a marked biological rhythm in their feeding, eating nearly all their food during the dark cycle, mostly within the first six hours. The animals in group I presented no change in the biological rhythm of their feeding habits with respect to the control group. The rats in group II showed a marked change in their food intake rhythm during the first 7 postoperative days since they could not distinguish between light and dark. There were no significant differences in the total amount of food ingested per 24 hours. Discussion. The vagal nerve is an important efferent pathway to the brain for stimuli related to food intake. Both the hepatic and gastrointestinal branches appear to influence the hunger/satiety cycle. Transection of the vagal nerve at the subdiaphragmatic level produces a marked change in the biological rhythm governing ingestion which, however, is transient since the normal rhythm is restored 7 to 8 days later. The total amount of food ingested per 24 hours is not significantly altered.
