Introduction

Splenosis is an infrequently observed clinical entity and is probably under-diagnosed.

Patients and methods

We performed a retrospective analysis of 307 splenectomies performed for various indications: traumatic in 112 patients, hematological processes in 134, surgical resection in 43, parasitosis and/or infections in 9 and other causes in 9.

Results

Functional splenic tissue was found in 14 patients. In 9, splenic tissue implanted by laparotomy was confirmed by the symptoms produced.

Conclusions

Splenosis should be considered in the longterm follow-up of symptomatic splenectomized patients.
