Resumen

El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar el impacto de la relación tecnológica entre los socios en las alianzas en I+D en tipos específicos de innovación de producto. Para ello, una vez desarrollado el marco conceptual enraizado en la teoría del aprendizaje organizacional y el enfoque de capacidades dinámicas, se ha realizado un estudio longitudinal de una muestra internacional de empresas farmacéuticas para contrastar el conjunto de hipótesis formuladas. La investigación empírica confirma que las relaciones de complementariedad y de similitud del conocimiento tecnológico de los socios cooperantes influyen de modo diferente en la generación de innovaciones radicales e incrementales. Estas evidencias ponen de manifiesto la importancia de disenar un adecuado portafolio de alianzas en I+D para desarrollar las distintas competencias de innovacion.

Abstract

This paper aims at analyzing the impact of technological relatedness between partners in R&D alliances on specific types of product innovation. After developing the conceptual framework based on organizational learning theory and dynamic capabilities, we carried out a longitudinal study of an international sample of pharmaceutical firms in order to test the hypotheses. The empirical research confirms that technological complementarity and similarity between partners influence differently on the creation of radical and incremental innovation. These evidences highlight the importance of designing a suitable portfolio of R&D alliances in order to develop different innovative capabilities.
