Low self-esteem will have an impact on deviant behaviors in adolescents. Previous research explained that low self-esteem would cause juvenile delinquency, such as sexual behavior deviance, suicide, and drug abuse.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0105"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1–3</span></a> Adolescents with low self-esteem tend to get less social support, thus creating feelings of worthlessness.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0120"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">4</span></a> It causes them to risk channeling their feelings into deviant behaviors.</p><p id="par0010" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Emotional problems are an internal factor that can deprive the adolescent of self-esteem. Adolescent emotional problems may include anxiety, depression, self-blame, and loneliness.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0125"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">5,6</span></a> The emotional problem is the impact of the inability to deal with the pressure caused by changes that those adolescents have experienced. The inability to deal with pressure could lead to emotional problems. The inability of adolescents to resolve emotional problems could cause them to have a negative view of themselves, which leads to low self-esteem.</p><p id="par0015" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The study was conducted in two high schools in South Jakarta. Some previous studies stated that a lot of high school adolescents had low self-esteem and emotional problems. Previous research found that 33.1% of high school adolescents had low self-esteem.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0135"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">7</span></a> In addition, other studies have found that high school adolescents experienced various academic pressures that have caused emotional problems.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0140"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">8</span></a> Based on this, researchers chose high school adolescents as research respondents. Adolescents in class XI were sampled, because class X students are just entering high school, so they are still adjusting themselves to academic pressure. In contrast, class XII is preoccupied with national examinations.</p><p id="par0020" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The researchers interviewed with the counseling teacher at one of the senior high schools (abbreviated to SHS) in South Jakarta. The teacher said that adolescents with a low self-esteem were fairly few. Such a low self-esteem of adolescents is generally caused by their feeling embarrassed by the economic conditions of their parents, parental divorce, academic achievement and seniority that occur in high school. Emotional problems that occur in high school adolescents are still within normal limits, such as academic rhythm anxiety. The school has provided its adolescent students with counseling guidance to deal with a low self-esteem and emotional problems. However, these efforts have not been effective in overcoming the problems faced by adolescents, because the school does not have a specific program to solve emotional problems and a low self-esteem in adolescents. Therefore, the researchers were interested in researching the relationship between emotional problems with self-esteem in adolescents. The results of study could be used as a reference when planning programs according to the needs of adolescents.</p></span><span id="sec0010" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0020">Method</span><span id="sec0015" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0025">Design</span><p id="par0025" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The design of this study was descriptive correlative with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling techniques used were purposive sampling and stratified-cluster sampling, with a total sample of 268 high school adolescents in South Jakarta.</p></span><span id="sec0020" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0030">Population and study setting</span><p id="par0030" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">This study involved adolescents of class XI of SHS 38 Jakarta and SHS 109 Jakarta. They were active students at their respective schools and had agreed to be research respondents. This study was conducted for five months, from January to May.</p></span><span id="sec0025" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0035">Data collection</span><p id="par0035" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The researchers used three instruments in this study, including a demographic questionnaire, the Strength Difficulties Questionnaire to measure emotional problems and the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory to measure self-esteem. The validity test results of the two questionnaires were higher than <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">r</span> table (0.361); the validity of the Strength Difficulties Questionnaire ranged from 0.67 to 0.68, while the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory questionnaire ranged from 0.377 to 0.689. The reliability test results were determined based on Cronbach Alpha; the reliability of the Strength Difficulties Questionnaire was 0.773, while that of the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory questionnaire was 0.889. This shows that the questionnaires were suitable for use.</p></span><span id="sec0030" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0040">Data analysis</span><p id="par0040" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Data were analyzed used univariate and bivariate analyses. The univariate analysis used central tendency and frequency distribution. Meanwhile, the bivariate analysis used the gamma correlation test.</p></span><span id="sec0035" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0045">Ethical aspects</span><p id="par0045" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The researcher used four ethical principles related to respondents, including respecting human dignity, respecting the privacy and confidentiality of research subjects, prioritizing justice and openness, and taking into account the benefits and losses incurred. This study has obtained the Ethics Committee of Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Indonesia No.103/UN2.F12.D/HKP.02.04/2019.</p></span></span><span id="sec0040" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0050">Results</span><span id="sec0045" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0055">Characteristics of adolescents</span><p id="par0050" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The characteristics of adolescents consist of age, sex, and residence status. Most respondents in class XI SHS in South Jakarta were 16 years old, with the youngest being 15 years old and the oldest being 18 years old.</p><p id="par0055" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">This study involved more female adolescents than male ones, with a percentage of 63.8%. The majority (81.7%) of class XI SHS adolescents in South Jakarta lived with their fathers and biological mothers in complete nuclear families (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0005">Table 1</a>).</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0005"></elsevierMultimedia></span><span id="sec0050" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0060">Adolescents self-esteem</span><p id="par0060" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Most adolescents in class XI SHS in South Jakarta have moderate self-esteem, which is as much as 54.9% (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0010">Table 2</a>).</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0010"></elsevierMultimedia></span><span id="sec0055" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0065">Adolescents emotional problems</span><p id="par0065" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The emotional problems of adolescents in class XI SHS in South Jakarta are mostly within the normal range of 69% (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0015">Table 3</a>).</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0015"></elsevierMultimedia></span><span id="sec0060" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0070">Relationship between emotional problems and self-esteem in adolescents</span><p id="par0070" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The researchers performed a gamma correlation test to see the relationship between emotional problems and self-esteem in adolescents. Adolescent emotional problems showed a significance value of 0.000 (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span><<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0.05), with a correlation coefficient (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">r</span>) of -0.668. Therefore, it could be seen that there is a significant relationship between emotional problems and self-esteem in adolescents, with a negative direction. The coefficient of determination (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">R</span>) of adolescent emotional problems is 0.446. This shows that emotional problems influence adolescents self-esteem by 44.6%, therefore other factors could influence adolescent self-esteem (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0020">Table 4</a>).</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0020"></elsevierMultimedia></span></span><span id="sec0065" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0075">Discussion</span><span id="sec0070" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0080">Self-esteem in adolescents</span><p id="par0075" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Most adolescents in class XI SHS in South Jakarta have a moderate self-esteem. This is in line with reports on high school adolescents in Banda Aceh, most of whom also had a moderate self-esteem.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0145"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">9</span></a> Adolescents with a moderate self-esteem have the same characteristics as those with high self-esteem, such as having high self-esteem, optimism, generosity, and independence problem management.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0150"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">10</span></a> The difference between students with high and moderate self-esteem is that the moderate ones have a lower level of self-confidence than the high ones do.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0155"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">11</span></a> Adolescents in class XI SHS in South Jakarta with a moderate self-esteem are not yet in a condition of optimal self-esteem. Adolescents are susceptible to weaken self-esteem if the level of their self-esteem decrease. Therefore, efforts need to be made to optimize adolescent self-esteem.</p><p id="par0080" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Efforts that could be made to optimize adolescent self-confidence could come from within and outside the individuals themselves. Strengthening individuals by increasing resilience and skills is one of the ways that could be done to increase adolescent self-confidences.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0160"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">12</span></a> Strengthening the family by improving communication and helping adolescents in solving problems is also an effort that could come from outside the adolescents. Adolescents could also do hobbies, practice positive thinking, and build positive relationships with others.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0165"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">13</span></a> Adolescents could pursue hobbies they love, in order to optimize their abilities and help them increase self-esteem. Adolescents could do various activities through extracurricular activities. A study shows that adolescents’ involvement in structured and interesting activities could support their increasing self-esteem.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0170"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">14</span></a> In addition, extracurricular activities could also help adolescents fulfill their developmental duties. Therefore, adolescents need to be actively involved in a variety of positive activities to maximize their potentials.</p></span><span id="sec0075" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0085">Emotional problems in adolescents</span><p id="par0085" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The emotional problems of respondents are mostly within normal limits. Previous research also showed the same thing, which is that most adolescents have normal category emotional problems.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0175"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">15</span></a> Adolescents with normal emotional problems will show characteristics of good mental health conditions, such as emotional stability and effective coping. Other studies explained the relationship between coping strategies and emotional problems, namely that the more passive coping strategies adolescents possess, the more they are related to stress symptoms and depression as part of emotional problems.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0180"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">16</span></a> Therefore, efforts are needed to keep adolescent emotional problems within normal limits optimally.</p><p id="par0090" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Efforts that could be made to keep emotional problems within normal limits include providing emotional stability and emotional intelligence training programs for adolescents. A study shows that emotional intelligence training could significantly improve adolescent emotional intelligence.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0185"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">17</span></a> The emotional intelligence training that could be given to adolescents includes self-understanding, self-motivation, and self-management. Another effort that could be done is through training in coping strategies for adolescents. A study explained that the Best of Coping Program (BOC) is an effective method to train adolescents in finding appropriate coping strategies when facing stressors.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0190"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span></a> The program taught adolescents optimistic thinking, communication skills, interpersonal relationships, problem-solving, decision making, goal setting, and time management skills. These efforts are expected to assist adolescents in developing their emotional stability.</p></span><span id="sec0080" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0090">Relationship between emotional problems and self-esteem in adolescents</span><p id="par0095" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Emotional problems are known to have a strong negative correlation with self-esteem in adolescents, meaning that the more the emotional problem of adolescents exceeds normal limits, the lower their self-esteem will be. This study is in line with previous studies regarding the relationship between self-esteem and emotional problems, which shows that there is a negative relationship between adolescent emotional problems and self-esteem. In other words, the more emotional problems of adolescents have, the lower their self-esteem will be.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0195"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">19</span></a> Previous research also showed similar results, where adolescents with abnormal emotional difficulties tended to have a low self-esteem.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0200"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">20</span></a> Therefore, adolescent abnormal emotional problems are one of the factors that bring about the decline in adolescent self-esteem.</p><p id="par0100" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Emotional problems that adolescents face have a significant contribution to changing self-esteem in adolescents. Adolescents with emotional problems such as depression and anxiety tend to have low self-esteem.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0195"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">19</span></a> Adolescents who are depressed and anxious could not properly deal with the problems they face, making their self-esteem decrease. Adolescents with emotional problems could also lead to despair. Adolescents with feelings of despair also tend to have low self-esteem.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0200"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">20</span></a> The inability of adolescents to solve their problems and submissiveness with perceived conditions creates emotional problems that could reduce adolescent self-esteem.</p><p id="par0105" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">One of the research limitations faced by the researchers was the fact that the adolescents felt bored when filling out the questionnaires because many questions needed to be answered. Researchers had prepared an ice-breaking activity, but the school did not give much time for filling out a questionnaire. Hence, some adolescents failed to finish the questionnaires completely and were thus not counted as research respondents.</p></span></span><span id="sec0085" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0095">Conclusion</span><p id="par0110" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">To concluded, there is a significant relationship between emotional problems and self-esteem in adolescents. Promotional and prevention efforts regarding adolescent self-esteem include leadership, extracurricular, and cognitive behavior therapy training. Meanwhile, the promotion and prevention of adolescent emotional problems are through emotional intelligence training, group counseling, and mental health education. This study aimed to determine the relationship between emotional problems with self-esteem in adolescents. The study used a descriptive correlative design with two sampling techniques; purposive sampling and stratified-cluster sampling. The research consisted of 268 high school adolescents in South Jakarta. Data were obtain using two questionnaires; Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire and the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory. The majority of high school adolescents in South Jakarta have a moderate level of self-esteem of 54.9%. The emotional problems that adolescents have been within the normal range at 69%. Emotional problems have a significant relationship with self-esteem in adolescents.
