Temanggung Regency is one of the regencies in Central Java province (Indonesia) known as tobacco-producing district.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0115"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">6</span></a> As mothers or housewives who should take care of the family, women who work in the tobacco sector should also be able to do the works that are usually done by male tobacco workers, such as lifting bamboo for the tobacco drying process under the sun, which is quite heavy. In addition, long working hours can also increase the likelihood of stress. During the tobacco harvest season, the work usually starts at night to breed the tobacco until dawn or early in the morning. Moreover, after that, they have to find a place to dry tobacco until noon. After that, they can go home for rest and then work again in the evening.</p><p id="par0015" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The stressful conditions experienced by women working is shown by the results of a study that showed 48.3% of married and 63.3% of single female workers are experiencing moderate stress. Married female workers feel more depressed with the physical condition of the workplace, the burden of work tasks to be carried out, the length of working hours in work, and also the judgment of the employer's work. In addition, they also felt depressed with the burden of duty as wives and mothers and a little rest time at home.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0120"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">7</span></a></p><p id="par0020" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">People do some mechanisms to manage the stress experienced. The mechanisms can be constructive or destructive.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0125"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">8</span></a> When the women who work in the tobacco sector are not able to use a proper coping mechanism, then the disruption in physical health and mental health can be experienced. Previous studies on stress and other female-specific mechanisms have been discussed. However, the studies in tobacco sectors have not been found yet. Based on the background, this research was conducted to know the stress level and the mechanisms used by women who work in the tobacco sector.</p></span><span id="sec0010" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0020">Method</span><p id="par0025" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The study used a mixed-methods procedure with a sequential explanatory strategy. The first phase of the study was quantitative research. A cross-sectional quantitative study was used to determine the level of stress and its relationship with the coping mechanism used. A total of 100 women selected using non-random sampling who met the inclusion criteria participated in this study. The inclusion criteria were: women working as farmers and/or tobacco processors were never diagnosed with severe mental disorders. The exclusion criteria are women of tobacco sector workers who cannot read and write.</p><p id="par0030" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The data collection was carried out using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) from Cohen et al. and Ways of Coping (WOC) questionnaires from Lazarus & Folkman.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0130"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">9,10</span></a> The data then analyzed using the univariate analysis to determine the perceived stress levels and coping mechanisms. The correlation between the perceived stress and coping mechanism is analyzed using bivariate analysis.</p><p id="par0035" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The second phase applied a qualitative method on five respondents to gain a better understanding of the management coping.</p></span><span id="sec0015" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0025">Results</span><span id="sec0020" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0030">Characteristics of respondents</span><p id="par0040" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The average age of respondents is 40 years, with an average length of work in the tobacco sector is approximately 19 years. A complete respondent demographic data is summarized in <a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0005">Table 1</a>.</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0005"></elsevierMultimedia></span><span id="sec0025" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0035">Quantitative data analysis results</span><p id="par0045" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The majority of respondents (75%) have moderate stress levels, and only 2% of subjects have high-stress levels. More than half of the respondents (55%) use an emotional-focused coping mechanism, and the other 45% uses problem-focused coping.</p><p id="par0050" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Meanwhile, using the Chi-square test to determine the correlation between the stress level and the mechanism used showed that there is no significant correlation between the level of stress and the coping mechanism (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0.05) (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0010">Table 2</a>).</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0010"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="par0055" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Problem-focused coping and emotional-focused coping are divided into several types of mechanism. In this study, further analysis of the coping type used in each main type is shown in <a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0015">Table 3</a>.</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0015"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="par0060" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Based on <a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0015">Table 3</a>, 45% of respondents used Problem-focused coping, and 55% of others used emotional-focused coping. Further analysis suggests that among 55% of respondents who used emotional-focused coping, 23% of them use the type of accepting responsibility. Whereas among respondents who were more likely to use problem-focused coping, a total of 26% of subjects used planful problem-solving.</p></span><span id="sec0030" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0040">Qualitative data analysis results</span><p id="par0065" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Participants stated that during the tobacco harvesting process, they experienced stress, fatigue, the excessive burden in employment as a tobacco farmer as well as household job responsibilities, lack of sleep, decreased appetite, irritability. Here are some of the respondents’ statements.<span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0005"><p id="spar0010" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">“Yes there are so many works to do, just do a little by little<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">…</span>” (P1)</p></span><span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0010"><p id="spar0015" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">“sometimes we don’t have enough sleep, very tired. And it's so stressful. Sometimes we even don’t have time to eat. Emotionally I’m tired, cranky. Lose appetite also…” (P2)</p></span><span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0015"><p id="spar0020" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleItalic">“…there are many clothes to be washed, so many dishes” (P3)</span></p></span><span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0020"><p id="spar0025" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleItalic">“…. Yes, tired” (P4)</span></p></span><span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0025"><p id="spar0030" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">“I should weed, look for the grass (for cows/goats) and many things, non-stop” (P5)</p></span></p><p id="par0070" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Five participants who were interviewed stated that they have responsibilities to manage the needs of husbands and children in addition to complete their work in the tobacco sector. Participants share some housekeeping tasks with their husbands and children, to overcome excessive burdens in order to set the time for all works to be resolved.<span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0030"><p id="spar0035" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">“…we share mutual understanding, each of us should understand our own tasks” (P1)</p></span><span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0035"><p id="spar0040" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleItalic">“yes, I share some tasks with my husband…” (P5)</span></p></span><span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0040"><p id="spar0045" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleItalic">“yes, sharing….(it's the nature of) family living” (P4)</span></p></span></p><p id="par0075" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The ways that the participants use to overcome the conditions of fatigue, stress, and excessive burden experienced during the harvest tobacco period are motivation to finish the existing tasks and to earn enough money after the tobacco has been sold. They also motivate themselves because all of the women working in the tobacco sectors are also experiencing the same condition. Therefore they accept the consequences of the risk of employment as tobacco farmers.<span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0045"><p id="spar0050" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleItalic">“If the tobacco sold, we get the money, and it motivates us” (P2)</span></p></span><span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0050"><p id="spar0055" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">“we accept everything, because there are many people who experience the same conditions” (P3)</p></span><span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0055"><p id="spar0060" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleItalic">“…just do the tasks, and it will finished” (P4)</span></p></span><span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0060"><p id="spar0065" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleItalic">“many people who experience the same conditions” (P5)</span></p></span></p></span></span><span id="sec0035" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0045">Discussion</span><span id="sec0040" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0050">Level of stress perception</span><p id="par0080" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">A previous study found that female workers (married and single) are suffered from moderate stress. The result of this study supports the previous study that most of the respondents (75%) experienced moderate stress levels. Married women are more depressed with the physical conditions of the workplace, the burden of work duties to be carried out, the length of working hours at work, and when the managers give the heavy tasks. They also feel depressed with the burden of duty as wife and mother; limited time to have a break, and high family demand.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0120"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">7</span></a> Another research revealed that there is a significant relationship between anxiety, perceived stress with life satisfaction in married women.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0140"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">11</span></a></p><p id="par0085" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Interestingly, this study found that only two women who have high levels of stress, even though the working hours in the tobacco processing sector are quite long. The processing of harvested tobacco generally begins in the afternoon until midnight, or the evening until the early morning. However, the process of tobacco planting and polishing is only done in one period in a year, generally around June to September or October. Therefore, although the working hours at the time of harvesting and processing are very long, it only lasts about three months, and the workers already adapt to this.</p><p id="par0090" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Although the multiple roles of women can cause stress, there is a result of another study which stated that mental health is positively correlated with working women/mothers (compared to unemployed mothers) and negatively correlated with the number of children.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0145"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">12</span></a> It can be assumed that the low and moderate stress level on the respondents are related to a positive level of stress (eustress) that is needed to increase alertness and energy to challenging situation.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0150"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">13</span></a> The results of the study also support previous studies stating that multiple roles of women, even at high levels that were experienced by “superwomen,” not significantly related to higher levels of stress, or low life satisfaction.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0155"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">14</span></a></p><p id="par0095" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Stress is not only related to what is happening around us but also about the demands we place on ourselves.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0150"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">13</span></a> When associated with the basic character of Javanese, one of them is <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">Nrima</span> (Acceptance), where <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">Nrima</span> (Acceptance) is to accept everything with a spiritual-psychological consciousness, without <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">Nggrundel</span> (grumbling from being disappointed in the back)<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0160"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">15</span></a>; it can be understood that respondents tend to be <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">Nrima</span> (accept), without placing excessively high demands on themselves.</p></span><span id="sec0045" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0055">The correlation of stress levels and coping mechanism used</span><p id="par0100" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">This study obtained that the level of stress is not correlated significantly with the mechanisms used. This result supports the previous study stating that stress and the mechanisms are always together, but what method to cope with stress depends on the type of stress and individual needs. So that the mechanisms used by individuals are not dependent or influenced by stress levels, but are more influenced by stress and individual types.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0165"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">16</span></a> We assume that the stress levels of women who work in the tobacco sector are also influenced by adaptability due to the long period of time undergoing the job as a tobacco farmer. The results of the research display when the ability of the worker's adaptation is high, it will affect low working stress.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0170"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">17</span></a></p><p id="par0105" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The coping mechanisms are distinguished two common strategies: problem-solving and emotion-focused coping strategies. In problem-focused coping, the efforts are conducted to change the stressful situation. While in the emotion-focused coping, the efforts are aimed to manage emotions, and sometimes are conducted by changing the meaning of the stressful situation without changing the situation.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0135"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">10</span></a></p><p id="par0110" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Studies have shown that humans usually use both types of the mentioned strategies, but the dominance strategy that is used, determined by the individual type and the stressors; for example, people will tend to use problem-focused coping when facing a changeable situation, but when the stressors are uncontrollable/cannot be changed, people usually tend to use emotion-focused coping.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0165"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">16</span></a> The situation faced by the respondents can be categorized as an unchangeable situation, hence, they tend to use emotion-focused coping.</p></span></span><span id="sec0050" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0060">Conclusion</span><p id="par0115" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">In conclusion, the study shows that majority of the women working in the tobacco sector experiencing moderate stress levels, and most of them use emotional-focused coping to overcome the stress. There is no significant correlation between the level of the stress and the coping mechanism used (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>=<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0.261). Based on qualitative data analysis, the respondents are experiencing stress, fatigue, and excessive burden due to their multiple roles. However, they use some strategies to overcome stress. This study used Mixed-methods procedures. A quantitative approach was conducted to know the level of stress and coping mechanisms. Whereas a qualitative approach was conducted to explore the stress management. Respondents: 100 women working in the tobacco sector. The results are 75% of the respondents have moderate stress levels, and 2% of subjects have high-stress levels. 55% of respondents use emotional-focused coping mechanisms, and the other 45% use problem-focused coping. There is no significant correlation between the level of stress and the mechanisms used (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>=<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0.261). Women working in the tobacco sector are experiencing stress and excessive burden due to their multiple roles. Most of respondents have moderate stress levels and use emotional-focused coping.
