Interventional ultrasound
Editado por Dr. José Luis del Cura Rodríguez - Servicio de Radiodiagnóstico, Hospital Universitario Donostia, Donostia-San Sebastián, España
Interventional radiology is undoubtedly an essential part of radiology. And it should be remembered that, despite the fact that the official name of the specialty is "radio diagnosis", radiology has also developed a broad therapeutic component.
Ultrasound is, undoubtedly, due to its great availability, the technique that has most contributed to bringing interventional radiology closer to the average radiologist.
Perhaps due to the need for a certain motor coordination and practical training in its use, procedures guided by ultrasound developed more slowly than those with computed tomography or fluoroscopy. However, thanks to the work of many pioneers, the use of ultrasound-guided procedures has spread enormously and today they constitute an important part of the activity of advanced radiology services, now representing the largest number of image-guided procedures, especially in breast, musculoskeletal and paediatric radiology.
The aim of the series is not to carry out an exhaustive review of this huge field of radiology, but to update and publicise some of the newest or most practical applications, make them available to the radiologist community and encourage interest in them.
