Películas, series, ficción y medicina" ] ] "textoCompleto" => "Jiménez Benito<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0020">1</a> contributed an editorial comment on ethics and ophthalmology summarizing the history of our specialty from Hippocrates to the present times, and concludes as follows: “We cannot expect perfect decisions in clinic sessions or ethical conflicts, but we can expect decisions to be taken with honesty, prudence and responsibility”.Many bioethical aspect are demonstrated and reinforced through the media, and the cinema, TV and Internet series have been the predominant media in recent years.There is a mainstream film called Blindness, 2008,<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0025">2</a> a Canadian adaptation of the book Essay on blindness by the Nobel winning author José Saramago.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0030">3</a> The film depicts an extreme situation in which people suddenly start losing their eyesight and it becomes necessary to quarantine patients in a ward without the most elementary medical equipment. This situation brings up all capital sins, predominantly anger, hopelessness, avarice, etc.In the unlikely event that the inhabitants of a major city begin to suffer sudden blindness, the response of public or civil society medical and health organizations will be immediate and all services will be made available for patients requiring isolation (not necessarily quarantine) so they could have at least basic medical attention, food and sanitation. This is in contrast with the script of the film in which all the affected people were locked in as if in a concentration camp, guarded by military, without any medical or nursing services, without covering their basic needs for food, sanitation or rest.It is likely that the need to portray such a gloomy situation would be sufficient to produce anarchy and lack of control among patients, although this does not necessarily reflect an actual response to a medical emergency that could arise.It is common for patients to mention TV series such as Dr. House, ER, Grey's anatomy as examples of medical action. What they don’t know is that many cases portrayed in these series are not adequately researched and that the immediate responses given to different medical scenarios are far from reality in what concerns technological and human resources available in current day-to-day medical activities." Archivos de la Sociedad Española de Oftalmología is the official journal of the Ophthalmology Society of Spain, that has over 4,000 members. It gives priority to the publication of basic, translational and clinic research including reviews, original articles, short communications, editorials, letters to the editor and clinic practice guides related to Ophthalmology and its subspecialties. A small section of the journal is reserved for the most relevant papers presented at the annual Congress of the Society. All manuscripts considered for publication are reviewed by expert examiner peers (double blind). The journal is published monthly and even though its official language is Spanish all articles are translated into English to increase the dissemination of scientific information. At present, Archivos is the only Spanish language Ophthalmology journal indexed in PubMed/MEDLINE in addition to other prestigious international databases such as Scopus.
