Having a limit of 10 references to cover such a wide area of knowledge worldwide, we have selected reviews or reference publications in each of the areas, obviously without this meaning that all those not cited not only in Spain but also in the international literature are undervalued. For this reason, the value judgement attributed to us in the commentary seems to us to be certainly unfair and inappropriate.

The excellent publication mentioned in said comment, the 2019 Round Table of our society entitled “Big Data in Ophthalmology”,2 is a reference work in our country on the subject of Big Data, a concept related but not identical to the artificial intelligence that is the subject of our editorial. Regardless of this nuance, we, the undersigned, can attest to the quality of said publication, since not only the second author but 4 of the 5 authors of our publishing house participated in different chapters thereof. Although this work is undoubtedly of unquestionable quality, having only 10 references to cover a subject that is not entirely coincident and dealt with at an international level, we did not feel it was right to include it, as in some way it would be an unnecessary self-citation. Similarly, we did not include another recent publication by 3 of the signatories, in this case specifically dedicated to artificial intelligence in retina, the subject of the Monograph 2020 of the Spanish Society of Retina and Vitreous (SERV).3 We sincerely believe that both works are of very high quality, but perhaps in an exercise of realism and humility, not enough to be cited in a limited selection of references worldwide.

Regarding the paragraph dedicated to glaucoma, it is not correct that we have dedicated a single reference as mentioned in the commentary, as we have included 3 and they have been specifically selected to describe 3 different application areas. The first is a publication in the journal Ophthalmology based on glaucoma detection using deep learning applied to retinography4; the second, for glaucoma detection based on deep learning applied to optical coherence tomography5; and the third, dedicated to predicting the 5-year progression of visual field defects in work carried out by a team from the University of Washington and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.6 We believe that this selection allows us to offer the lay reader a concrete example of each of these 3 areas of application of artificial intelligence in glaucoma, which was the aim of the editorial. The 3 papers cited seem to us to be entirely relevant and appropriate for this purpose.

In conclusion, we can only reiterate our surprise at said comment, which we understand is undoubtedly due to a misinterpretation of the message we wanted to convey for the reasons given in this letter. Of course, there are many examples of Spanish groups that have worked for years with outstanding success on this subject in different specific areas of Ophthalmology. Proof of this are the international publications derived from these projects, but it was not the aim of our editorial to detail this work. We would like to express our willingness to collaborate in future initiatives aimed at describing in particular the current state of artificial intelligence in ophthalmology in our country.
Conflict of interests
The authors declare no conflict of interest.
" "textoCompletoSecciones" => array:1 [ "secciones" => array:2 [ 0 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "sec0005" "titulo" => "Conflict of interests" ] 1 => array:1 [ "titulo" => "References" ] ] ] "pdfFichero" => "main.pdf" "tienePdf" => true "NotaPie" => array:1 [ 0 => array:2 [ "etiqueta" => "☆" "nota" => "
Please cite this article as: Zarranz-Ventura J, Bernal-Morales C, Saenz de Viteri M, Castro Alonso FJ, Urcola JA.
