Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the effects that pre-operative hysteroscopy has on the frequency of positive peritoneal cytology at the time surgical management of endometrial carcinoma. A retrospective observational study was carried out on 119 patients with a diagnosis of endometrial carcinoma from 1993-2003. The frequency of positive peritoneal washes in hysteroscopy patients and patients with a different diagnostic method were compared. No association was found between previous hysteros-copy and positive peritoneal cytology at the time of treatment. Hysteroscopy is a method that may be used without engendering any additional risks in the diagnosis of endometrial carcinoma.
