Summary

Objective:To make a retrospective study of patients with epithelial ovarian cancer diagnosed in ourHealth Area (Cabueñes, Gijón) between 1991 and2001.

Material and methods:We reviewed the patients, tumour and treatment characteristics to establish therole of primary surgical cytoreduction in the treatment of epithelial ovarian cancer and its possible im-pact on patient survival.

Results:During the period studied 123 cases ofepithelial ovarian cancer were diagnosed. All the pa-tients had primary surgery for cytoreduction followedby a platinum based chemotherapy regime. Followingsurgery the residual tumour was significantly relatedto the result of the «second look», global survival, and index of recurrence.
