Our journal, Endocrinología, Diabetes y Nutrición [Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition], has evolved over the years thanks to the invaluable efforts of the different components of the Editorial Committee and its Editors-in-Chief, the support of the Associations involved, Sociedad Española de Endocrinología y Nutrición (SEEN) [Spanish Endocrinology and Nutrition Association] and Sociedad Española de Diabetes (SED) [Spanish Diabetes Association] and of course, the tireless reviewers and the commitment of great authors and readers who continue to trust the journal’s scientific rigour. As part of our quest for continuous improvement, over the course of 2023 we will be incorporating a number of changes which we would like to share with you.
The first big change, as a contribution to helping save the environment, the journal will only be published online, and no longer in paper format. This will also help reduce costs and publication time.
In terms of content, in order to update the journal and continue to improve its quality and impact, we have incorporated changes which are already evident in the publication rules,1 including changes in types of article, new requirements for article preparation and a greater presence of English. We will no longer publish narrative reviews and short reviews, these being replaced by two new types of article. First of all, we are incorporating systematic reviews, following the international PRISMA2 or MOOSE3 guidelines; it is recommended that the review protocol be registered in a public database and we encourage you to prioritise submitting them in English. Secondly, there are updates for the submission of a "Case report", in English, which should have the following structure: description of the case; management (and evidence to justify it); areas of uncertainty; guidelines; conclusion and recommendations.
Guidelines drawn up by associations or their working groups which are published in the journal will have to follow the AGREE methodology.4 The journal will only publish the executive summary of the guidelines, in English, with a link to the full text (in Spanish or English), which can be hosted on the website of the corresponding Association or provided as supplementary material. Up to six per year will be included, and they will be prioritised by the Board of the corresponding Association. The Editorial Committee will check that the recommended methodology has been followed.
In order to give greater diffusion to the journal's publications, preference will be given to manuscripts submitted in English. As mentioned above, both the "Case report" contents and the executive summaries of Guidelines will only be accepted in English. Additionally, we encourage all those interested to also submit their original manuscripts, systematic reviews and letters in English. Although the journal does not currently charge publishing costs, we are considering introducing a fee for articles submitted in Spanish to contribute to their translation. Each year 10 articles, selected from among those of the best quality by the Editorial Committee, will be published openly, at no cost, giving preference to those submitted in English.
We are adding the "graphical abstract" to the "structured text summary" which already features in the journal, and this is expected to give more visibility to the articles using this format.
Finally, the Editorial Committee would like to sincerely thank those who review the manuscripts for their voluntary contribution, as without them the progressive improvements in the scientific level of the journal would not be possible. To recognise the review work, SED and SEEN are each organising an annual award for the best reviewer of the year which will be presented at their respective Annual Congresses. The selection will be made by the Editorial Committee based on the reviews carried out on the articles submitted to the journal. The elements assessed will be the quality, number of reviews and speed of response.
We hope that all these new developments will continue to improve the quality of the journal and increase the international visibility of Spanish scientific production in endocrinology, diabetes and nutrition.
