According to the data from the <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">World Health Organization</span> (WHO), ARTI mortality rate reached 4.25 million every year in the Word.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0105"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1–3</span></a> According to Riskesdas, ARTI also becomes one of the diseases in the top 10 diseases mostly occurring at hospitals in Indonesia.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0120"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">4</span></a></p><p id="par0010" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Environment and behavior factors have a big impact and increase the risk of occurrence of ARTI.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0120"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">4</span></a> The environment being risky of causing a health problem in, in this case, ARTI, is the environment with total dust particles of over standard quality threshold, motor vehicle smokes, and other air pollution.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0125"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">5</span></a> The duration of working hours of traffic police officers, as written in the Regulation of PERKABAHARKAM BABINKAM of the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia No. 4 of 2011, is eight hours.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0130"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">6</span></a> Nevertheless, bearing in mind that the President of the Republic of Indonesia residences at Bogor, it has resulted in the traffic police officers at Bogor have more than the determined working hours. It means that the traffic police officers at Bogor do have direct contact with pollution than in other areas.</p><p id="par0015" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Meanwhile, a person's behavior that can be related to the occurrence of ARTI is using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). PPE is devices that function to protect the body and are used to avoid the danger of work accident.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0135"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">7</span></a> The negligence of traffic police officers in wearing PPE is supported by the non-availability of PPE adequately by the institution so that the motivation of the traffic police officers to wear PPE becomes very low. Such a condition shows that traffic police officers are one of the groups having such a high potential of suffering ARTI.</p></span><span id="sec0010" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0020">Method</span><p id="par0020" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">This research used a correlative descriptive study design with a cross-sectional approach and by using a <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">simple random sampling</span> technique involving 71 respondents of traffic police officers at Bogor City Police Resort. Data were collected by using three instruments, namely work environment questionnaire, PPE application compliance questionnaire, and the occurrence of ARTI questionnaire. The questionnaires used were valid and reliable. This study had followed the ethical testing process and was declared to have passed the ethical review by the Research Ethics Committee Faculty of Nursing Universitas Indonesia No.162/UN2.F12.D/HKP.02.04/2019. The analysis conducted is the univariate analysis and bivariate analysis by using the Chi-square test.</p></span><span id="sec0015" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0025">Result</span><p id="par0025" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The result of this research has obtained the characteristics of respondents of traffic police officers at Bogor City Police Resort with the age of averagely 33.86 years old, and the traffic police officers are aged between 19 and 50 years old. Traffic police officers are dominated by male police officers, namely 54 persons (76.1%), and female police officers are 17 persons (23.9%). The result of statistics for a working environment, self-protection application, and occurrence of ARTI is presented in the table. The results showed that 52.1% of the traffic police officers at Bogor City Police Resort have health hazards (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0005">Table 1</a>). Whereas 53.5% did not compliance by PPE application (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0005">Table 1</a>), and 50.7% experienced ARTI (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0005">Table 1</a>). Furthermore, the results of the analysis also showed that there was a relationship between the working environment and ARTI occurrence to the traffic police officers at Bogor Kota (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>=<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0.024) (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0010">Table 2</a>). Besides, there was a significant relationship between self-protection application and ARTI occurrence; non-compliance police officers had a higher ARTI occurrence that those who were compliance (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>=<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0.001) (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0010">Table 2</a>).</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0005"></elsevierMultimedia><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0010"></elsevierMultimedia></span><span id="sec0020" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0030">Discussion</span><p id="par0030" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">This research was conducted to 71 traffic police officers at Bogor City Police Resort. The average age of the traffic police officers in this research obtained is 33.86 years old. According to Berman, Synder, and Frandsen, early adult age ranges between 20–40 years old, so the traffic police officers’ age in this research can be regarded as early adult age.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0140"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">8–10</span></a> A prior study conducted by Fentiana and Putri stated that in the majority, the traffic police officers in Medan City are from the male gender with the percentage of 95.2%.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0155"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">11</span></a> Respondent's characteristics, which are also reviewed in this research is smoking habit. A smoking habit can weigh down the lung performance to obtain such clean air so that the individual smoking is risky of experiencing ARTI.</p><p id="par0035" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The result of the research regarding the working environment to the traffic police officers showed that 52.1% of the traffic police officers had a risky working environment. This is in line with the research conducted by Setyowaty, Fitriangga, and Jati, which titled ‘Potency of Health Disturbance of Traffic Police Officers due to Carbon Monoxide (CO)’ which mentioned that the working environment of traffic police officers is very risky of causing health disturbance.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0160"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">12</span></a></p><p id="par0040" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">This is supported by the survey from the Directorate General of PPM and PL, almost 80% of the police officers of Polda Metro Jaya suffer ARTI.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0130"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">6</span></a> The high occurrence of ARTI to the police officers at Polda Metro Jaya was because most of them do their tasks in the field within quite a very long time. The longer an individual is working in an environment which can reduce physiological function, then the bigger the possibility of said individual to experience a decrease of function of the organ where such matter can trigger an occurrence of health problem.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0140"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">8,13,14</span></a> Seen from their working duration, traffic police officers are working on the streets for 8<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>h/day or more in case of certain situations. The longer the traffic police officers are standing on the streets, the more and more air pollution being exposed to the said group of workers. If such matter is conducted repeatedly with such a long-time duration and a long period, then a higher possibility of the said traffic police officers would suffer from ARTI. Besides, the high occurrence of ARTI to the traffic police officers at Polda Metro Jaya was supported by the high air pollution in Jakarta, in which 70% of it comes from motor vehicles containing carbon monoxide.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0130"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">6</span></a> Sandra, in her research, also stated that the transportation sector is the contributor of 80% of air pollution in urban areas in Indonesia.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0175"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">15</span></a> Such matter is similar to the research according to Setyowaty, Fitriangga, and Jati, who stated that based on the correlation analysis conducted, it is obtained that traffic police officers working on streets experience ARTI as impact.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0160"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">12</span></a></p><p id="par0045" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The research done by Dewi titled ‘Relationship between Working Environment and Occurrence of Acute Respiratory Tract Infection to the Traffic Police Officers at Polwiltabes Semarang’ stated that the figure of occurrence of ARTI at the traffic police officers is 1.96 times higher than the police officers at the managerial division, but after being tested, it is evident that there is no significant relationship.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0180"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">16</span></a> Such matter is because of the high degree of dust particles in Bogor. According to the data from the Life Environment Services of Bogor City, the degree of a dust particle in Bogor reached 358.01 micrograms per normal meter cubic the amount of which is existing far above the quality standard threshold regulated in the Government Regulation Number 41 of 1999, namely 230 micrograms per normal meter cubic.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0185"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">17</span></a></p><p id="par0050" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Besides the working environment, the risk of occurrence of ARTI can also increase based on behavior factor.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0125"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">5</span></a> The result showed that 53.5% did not comply with using PPE. This is perhaps as a result of the statement or opinion of traffic police officers who are not disciplined in using or wearing a mask, which stated that they felt uncomfortable and found it difficult to blow the whistle if they used a mask. Therefore, there are many traffic police officers with bad criteria in wearing a mask while working in arranging the traffic and streets. Besides, research was done by Pujiani and Siwiendrayanti also stated that most respondents are not wearing a mask with a reason that they feel uncomfortable and are used not to wearing PPE.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0190"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span></a> The respondents of the research also uttered that the use of PPE is felt difficult and not practical because all respondents have a smoking habit while working. Besides, the use of PPE also results in uncomfortably if it is worn for quite a long time. In addition, the non-compliance of traffic police officers in self-protection applications is supported by the non-availability of adequate self-protection devices by the institution so that traffic police officers’ motivation to wear self-protection devices is very low.</p><p id="par0055" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The condition of traffic police officers who day-to-day make direct contact with air pollution will increase the risk of the arising of ARTI. When the traffic police officers do not comply with protecting themselves by using PPE, then the potential of traffic police officers to suffer ARTI will be bigger and bigger.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0195"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">19,20</span></a> Air pollution exposure for quite a long-time duration and repeatedly can irritate the respiratory tract, which will end to ARTI. Even exposure with small concentration can irritate the respiratory tract, therefore possibly ARTI will be higher and higher if the traffic police officers are not wearing PPE while working. Moreover, there are a lot of types of air pollution on the streets, namely when an individual is exposed to several types of air pollution at the same time will result in a combination effect, which will decrease health status.</p></span><span id="sec0025" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0035">Conclusion</span><p id="par0060" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">It can be concluded that there was a relationship between the working environment and using PPE with the occurrence of ARTI to the traffic police officers. Thus, nursery services can cooperate with related institutions and families to emphasize family roles by health education relating to the factor of risk of ARTI emergence, which is relating to the working environment and self-protection application.
