The event opened on 12 May, coinciding with International Nurses' Day, and was held in conjunction with the 59th National Congress of the Society of Intensive Care Medicine and Coronary Units (SEMICYUC). The theme for this year was "Sustainable technology at the service of the critically ill patient".

The president of the Official College of Nursing of Barcelona, Dr Paola Galvany, and the president of the Official College of Medicine of Barcelona, Dr Jaume Padrós, opened the congress, together with the presidents of the SEEIUC and SEMICYUC who gave a welcoming speech. The opening speech was given by members of the OPEN ARMS project, Oscar Camps, founder of the NGO, and Anna Coronado, a nurse working as a volunteer, who shared their experiences, the work of the NGO, and the main activities of the nurses involved.

True to our philosophy, during the congress we examined in depth and updated essential and other innovative topics for the daily practice of nurses in ICU, such as the sessions on "Dog-assisted therapy in ICU", "Artificial intelligence in ICU", "Intensive care and social networks", "Is the practice nurse in ICU possible?", as well as recurring topics which always need review such as "Update on pain monitoring in critical patients", "Update on secretion management in critical patients", "Ethical implications, management and competency profile of the nurse in ECMO-CPR", "Strategies for the prevention of anaemia in adult critical patients", "NOT to do: National project for critically ill patients".

The dissemination techniques were successfully diverse, involving simulation, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence. A highlight was the pre-congress course for simulation instructors, Improving TeamStepps teamwork, which provides teachers with new tools to train their teams.

This edition of the congress had fifty speakers, nineteen moderators, divided over eighteen sessions and thirteen workshops, nine of them funded by the industry, with twenty-eight teachers focussing on clinical care, as well as training, research, clinical safety, and management. This required a great effort on the part of the society's working groups and scientific committee, whom we would like to thank for their enthusiasm, involvement, and commitment.

The joint sessions between the two societies addressed current issues such as the comprehensive approach to a serious adverse event, showing useful algorithms for action in the care of first, second, and third victims. The important topic of organ donation in the ICU setting was highlighted, and many of the concerns we have when we encounter these cases were resolved. We were also informed about the joint project between the two societies and the HUCI Foundation for the development of projects in the different lines of work in which we can be involved.

We are pleased to report that this year there was an improvement in the quality of the 366 abstracts submitted for oral communications and posters. This is evidenced by the fact that few abstracts were rejected, and all the prizes were awarded, which was not possible in the two previous congresses, where some prizes were not awarded.

Of note was the intense scientific activity at the congress. All the sessions and workshops this year were interesting, with the participation of nurses, economists, influencers, doctors, psychologists, and physiotherapists, among others. We also had international speakers from the United States, England, Portugal, and as special guests, members of the Mexican Association of Nurses specialised in Critical Medicine and Intensive Care (AMEEMCTI). We hope to collaborate with them in the future, keeping in close contact with their team, led by their president Joseph Tiutelin.

This year, we wanted to highlight the importance of drafting a document in accordance with Royal Decree 589/2022 of 19 July 2022, regulating the cross-sectional training of specialties in Health Sciences, as well as the procedure and criteria for proposing a new intensive care nurse specialist qualification. This document will be essential to obtain the backing of at least seven autonomous communities and thus attain the speciality.

I would like to remind all professionals who have contacts in their autonomous communities to forward them to us, to facilitate the management of this necessary support: secretaria@seeiuc.org

This congress marked our farewell to our fellow physiotherapists, who, after growing and developing professionally, have embarked on the road to delivering their own projects and events. We thank them for all these years of close collaboration and wish them every success, in the hope that we will continue to undertake activities together in the future.

I cannot conclude without thanking and mentioning the altruistic and excellent work of the members of the Board of Directors and the Scientific Committee at the 49th SEEIUC National Congress. The programme presented was the result of all of their hard work, including the scientific contributions of the Scientific Committee and members’ needs, gathered through a survey.

I would also like to thank the companies that sponsored this event, whose support was essential in making it happen, Baxter, Fresenius Medical Care, Arjo, B|Braun, 3M, CareFusion, Convatec, Chiesi, Nursea, Hill-Rom, Fujifilm Sonosite, Getinge, ICUMedical, Linet, Sedanamedical, and Atos. I would like to highlight the collaboration of the Official College of Nursing of Barcelona and the Council of Nursing Colleges of Catalonia in sponsoring the prizes awarded during the congress.

I would also like to sincerely thank all the speakers for their dedication and participation in the congress, and the authors for sharing their very interesting papers. Special thanks to all the attendees and in particular to the members of the society for their continuous support and contributions.

I send you my warmest regards.

See you in Valencia from 14 to 18 June!
" "pdfFichero" => "main.pdf" "tienePdf" => true ] "idiomaDefecto" => "en" "url" => "/25299840/0000003500000003/v1_202407221303/S2529984024000338/v1_202407221303/en/main.assets" "Apartado" => array:4 [ "identificador" => "65071" "tipo" => "SECCION" "en" => array:2 [ "titulo" => "Editorial" "idiomaDefecto" => true ] "idiomaDefecto" => "en" ] "PDF" => "https://static.elsevier.es/multimedia/25299840/0000003500000003/v1_202407221303/S2529984024000338/v1_202407221303/en/main.pdf?idApp=UINPBA00004N&text.app=https://www.elsevier.es/" "EPUB" => "https://multimedia.elsevier.es/PublicationsMultimediaV1/item/epub/S2529984024000338?idApp=UINPBA00004N" ]
