Abstract

The current trends in patient care models have focused on a collaborative interdisciplinary approach to achieve delivery of quality care to the patient. This new interdisciplinary collaboration has resulted in measurable improvements and benefits to the patients and the health care delivery system.

The following article presents an innovative multidisciplinary health care model that was developed by Sharp Health Care in California (USA), for their arthroplasty patients. This program is initiated in the pre‐operative phase of the patient arthroplasty intervention and is continued through their hospitalization and post-operative discharge follow-up. The institution of the program has resulted in increased patient satisfaction of the care they received at Sharp Health, also there has been a decrease in patient hospital stay days and a reduction in the incidence of infections, finally Sharp Health has realized a significant financial savings in care delivery per patient episode. Physiotherapy holds a primary role in the delivery and success of this program.
