Other cohabitants reported similar clinical symptoms.</p><p id="par0010" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">A dermatological examination revealed small papules and excoriations of symmetrical distribution on the back of the patient’s hands, her interdigital spaces, and her abdominal region. Linear acarine grooves were detected on the flexor surface of both wrists with the ink test (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0005">Fig. 1</a>A and B).</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="fig0005"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="par0015" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The patient and all her cohabitants were treated with two cycles of 5% permethrin cream separated by a one-week interval, observing a good clinical response in all cases.</p><p id="par0020" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Scabies is a parasitic dermatosis caused by <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">Sarcoptes scabiei</span> var. <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">hominis</span>. Acarine grooves appear as wavy, filiform, hyperkeratotic lesions predominantly located in flexural areas. Although this cutaneous finding is highly suggestive of scabies, they are not always clearly visible. The ink test consists in the direct application of bluish-black ink on suspicious lesions and subsequently cleaning the skin surface with alcohol.
