The training programmes on offer are wide-ranging and periodically recover, influenced by trends, techniques to enhance various skills, some as classic and age-old as creativity and mindfulness.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0030"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1</span></a></p><p id="par0010" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">In 2017, a training programme targeting Mútua Terrassa group health professionals – a group that manages a university hospital and nine health centres – delivered six courses on mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT). These course were delivered both as personal and professional development techniques for the treatment of various mental and physical illnesses.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0035"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">2</span></a></p><p id="par0015" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Our study analysed the impact of these MBCT-based courses, which integrate the practice of mindfulness with cognitive therapy tools, to improve the management of emotions. We designed a quasi-experimental, before and after study, which was approved by the Clinical Research Ethics Committee. We arranged volunteer participants into groups of 12–20. The core of the training course was a protocol on MBCT lasting eight weeks, which required participants to attend class 2<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>h per week and included personalised, practical training exercises.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0040"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">3</span></a> The course material included an official <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">dossier</span> with audio exercises. Those enrolled in the course were encouraged to share their experiences through debate and guided reflection.</p><p id="par0020" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Sociodemographic data were collected: sex, age and profession. The effectiveness of the training course, where participants learned to relate to their mind, was assessed through the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), Spanish version.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0045"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">4</span></a> This questionnaire was answered by participants twice: at the first and in the final course sessions. The MAAS questionnaire has been validated and contains 15 variables, answered using a scale of 1 to 6 points. We used univariate and bivariate descriptive statistics to analyse our data. We used the Student's <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">t</span>-test for paired data for the comparison of the results collected from the before and after MAAS questionnaires. Statistical analysis was performed using the IBM SPSS statistical software package (version 25; IBM Corp., Armonk, USA). Participation for the questionnaire was 100% among those attending the sessions (first session <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>=<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>97 and final session <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>=<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>84) (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0005">Table 1</a>). Thirteen people filled out the questionnaire for only one session and could thus not be included in the paired pre-post analysis. 97% of the sample were females. Their mean age was 45 (range: 24-61 years-old). The results obtained before and after course completion on the MAAS scale, are shown in <a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0005">Table 1</a> according to total and grouped by sex, age and profession. In all cases, the MAAS score increased after course completion. Overall, 0.9 more points were obtained after the course (95% CI: 0.7-1.0 points). In addition, there was also a relationship between the pre-course MAAS score and age, although not with profession. Those aged younger than 45 scored 0.3 points less than those who were 45 years-old or older (95% CI: 0.1-0.6 points).</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0005"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="par0025" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The main limitations of the study were that the course was delivered for volunteer participants who might have different characteristics from those who did not request this training, that there was no control group and that there was a loss of 13% of the sample for the paired analysis.</p><p id="par0030" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Professionalism is defined by health professionals’ values and competencies.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0050"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">5</span></a> We consider being aware of what our priorities and preferences are and reflecting on their suitability is essential, since it can influence our decisions and actions.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0050"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">5</span></a> This study saw differences by age and sex. The health professional profile interested in receiving this type of training was that of a female whose average age was 45 and whose profession was often administrative. Also worth noting was that age correlated positively with the MAAS score obtained before the course. All the professional groups, of any sex, age and profession, showed similar benefits in the MAAS scale after the course.</p><p id="par0035" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">In conclusion, completing a brief course based on cognitive therapy improved voluntary health professionals’ mindfulness skills.
