He suffered from progressive abdominal distension and weight stagnation. Physical examination showed a weight of 3,100 g (weight-for-length/height Z-score: −2.3 standard deviations), bilateral cryptorchidism, and a soft abdomen with flaccid skin (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0005">Fig. 1</a>).</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="fig0005"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="par0010" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">A clinical diagnosis of prune belly syndrome was established. Abdominal ultrasound showed absence of abdominal muscles, ureteral dilatation, and polycystic kidneys. The blood test showed haemoglobin levels of 9 g/dl, urea of 123 mg/dl and a creatinine of 2.1 mg/dl. The patient was transferred to a tertiary hospital, where extrarenal clearance and intensive supportive care were performed.</p><p id="par0015" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Prune belly syndrome is a congenital entity defined by the triad of abdominal muscle hypoplasia, urinary tract morphologic abnormalities, and bilateral cryptorchidism. It is associated with cardiopulmonary and musculoskeletal abnormalities. It is due to the abnormal development of the mesoderm. Although its characteristics point to a genetic basis, its specific pathogenesis is not well defined. The <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">prune belly</span> syndrome incidence is one in every 35,000–50,000 live births, with a male prevalence of 95%.
