:La incontinencia fecal es un problema de prevalencia desconocida, que puede afectar a personas de cualquier edad y sexo. Es un síntoma incapacitante para quienes la padecen, limitando sus actividades laborales y sociales y disminuyendo su autoestima. Tiene además una gran repercusión económica, debido al coste derivado de su diagnóstico y tratamiento, debido a su aumento con el envejecimiento de la población. La correcta realización de la historia clínica y la exploración física orientan el diagnóstico etiológico, las exploraciones complementarias a realizar y el tratamiento. Dicho tratamiento deberá individualizarse en cada paciente y tendrá como objetivo mejorar su calidad de vida.

:En el presente artículo se realiza una revisión de las causas de incontinencia fecal, la valoración del paciente incontinente, las exploraciones complementarias que pueden ser útiles y las distintas opciones terapéuticas, tanto médicas como quirúrgicas.

:Fecal incontinence is a problem having an unknown prevalence, that may affect persons of any age and gender. It is an incapacitating symptom for those who suffer it, limiting their work and social activities and decreasing their self-esteem. It also has a large economic repercussion, given the cost arising from its diagnosis and treatment, due to its increase with aging of the population. The correct performance of the clinical history and physical examination orients the etiological diagnosis, complementary examinations to be performed, and treatment. This treatment should be individualized in each patient and should have the objective of improving their quality of life.

:In this article, a review is made of the fecal incontinence causes, assessment of the incontinent patient, complementary examinations that can be useful and different medical as well as surgical therapeutic options.
