Summary

To compare endometrial resection versus the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system in the treatment of dysfunctional uterine bleeding

Patients And Methods

Eighty-seven premenopausal women with menorrhagia were included. Menstrual loss was estimated using a pictorial chart and serum hemoglobin and ferritin determinations. The degree of satisfaction with the treatment was evaluated

Results

Recurrent menorrhagia was observed at 6 months in six women (18%) in the intrauterine device group and in four women (12%) in the resection group. The degree of satisfaction was high in both groups

Conclusions

The levonorgestrel intrauterine system is an effective nonsurgical treatment of dysfunctional uterine bleeding. Endometrial resection is more effective but involves surgery
